Can i connect 2 routers to one modem?

My problem is that sometimes someone in my house turns the router off for various reasons leaving the house with no internet. My question is can i hook up another router in-between the current modem and router with like a switch or something so that there are 2 routers so when 1 goes off there is still the second one turned on? Current hardware Virgin media superhub in modem mode connected to a asus rt n66u router!

You can't run the routers in parallel. The modem will see and serve one and only one device.

If I'm reading you correctly you want something like this:

Modem -> Router -> Router -> Rest of network

For redundancy purposes. That's not really going to work, because if EITHER router then fails, the rest of the network is cut off from the modem. Honestly, your best solution is explaining to the others in the house that the router should not be turned off, period. They are pieces of hardware meant to run 24/7. If you wanted a redundant solution, you'd need something more like this:

Modem -> Router 1 -> Network
v
Router 2 -> Network.

In which case you really just need to make sure that either you want totally separate networks, or you need to manage which address ranges belong to which router and configure a route between them to share local traffic.

Not the way you envision it, no.

Currently, you have:
modem -> router -> devices

What you envision:
Modem -> switch -> 2 routers -> devices

Problems:
1. Your device will be on one or the other router
2. The modem will see and serve one and only one device....a router (or PC)

You could have them inline:
Modem -> router A -> devices + (dumbed down)router B -> devices
('dumbed down', because you want one and only one DHCP server in the LAN...router A)

Problem:
If router A is turned off, everything is out. If router B is turned off, all devices from that don't work.

The is a people problem, not a tech problem.
Why are they turning the router off?

Thanks for the helpful answers im not bothered about other devices on the current network i would likely connect all my devices to the second router so when the other one gets turned off the second one would have my devices connected and would provide myself with internet. From your answers it appears i could do this!
