Hello !

note: i live in canada

I'm in the process of buying parts for a new gaming PC with a very tight budget, so i try to cut everywhere i can. I've been suggested a Asrock z97 anniversary but i'm still worried since it's literaly the lower priced z97 on the market. (found it at 99$ with a very appealing 30$ mail-in rebate http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_1207_1206_1201&item_id=074379). So, questions:

1- Durability. I usualy keep my PC for about 4-5 years. Can i expect this board to last this long as much as a better one such as, for exemple, an asus z97-a ?

2- Overclock. Can i expect a slight overclock (4.0 - 4.2 ghz) without worrying about making it last 5 years ? (assuming i manage to get OK temperatures)

Speaking of overclock, i always wanted to do it, but is it really worth the extra money ? (20$ for a K cpu, 30$+ for a cooler, more for a Z motherboard). Will i really see the difference ?

and just an extra question about graphic card (i know i'm on motherboard forum, sorry). How good is this one ? Price seems nice. http://www.ncix.com/detail/gigabyte-radeon-r9-290-windforce-db-99167-1342.htm (i'm pretty sure a 280x would be enough for NOW but since i keep my PC a very long time, i think a 290 would be better)

Thanks !

Thanks !

A 290 for $349 CAD is pretty good, so unless you can find a 970 for comparable or just a bit more, it's a reasonable deal.

The motherboard will have had any corner cut they could to cram a Z97 in at an H97 price point. Audio, NIC, traces, VRM phases, everything will be done as cheaply as possible. This will yield poor overclocking results, a shorter lifetime, and potential damage to other components. If you need the cheapest Z97 possible, it is the board you want, but you are sacrificing a ton by getting it.

I got the asrock z97 anniversary edition with i5-4590. it is a cheap z97 mobo and open me to broadwell upgrade if i ever need to. it is a cheap mobo in general. for a budget it would be a good buy. quality wise, yes you do suffer performance hit, then again i do not see how you can get any better performance with a 70 dollar mobo. it would be probably one of the best mobo you can get for the price. generally i do not see the benefit in OCing an i5, because you end up spending more on a cooler and quality mobo. you can save those money and get a less expensive none oc mobo then a better gpu for better gaming performance.
