Need to get a NAS drive converted for PC use

I have a new (empty) 3tb NAS hard drive that I want to install into my computer and use as an extra storage drive. In it's current state it is not being acknowledged by the computer (windows 7 ultimate), I have a USB storage bay that I installed the hard drive in and then connected to
the computer. The hard drive shows up in the bay under Devices but I can't access it. It doesn't show up at all in My Computer.
I was told I should try to format the drive. The guy who told me this gave me details on how to get to the drive to format it but not what format it needs to converted to. My question is, into what format should I format it to, NTFS, FAT 32, does it matter? Will I need to run a full format or quick? And does anyone have any idea how long it will take either way?

I know I could purchase a NAS storage bay and run it through there but my network is running through a Windows 8 system and I can't access anything on the network with my Windows 7 machine.

I'm running a business and need the storage and don't have the option of a long down time.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks Kanewolf, and Because, I'd reached the conclusion that since the hard drives in the computer are NTFS it would be best to follow with this one. Anyone have any idea how long it might take to format a drive that size?

a fast format? 20 seconds. LoL
A full format? hours and hours.

Please check your motherboards specs on the manufacturers support site and ensure that it supports 3tb drives. If you have a graphical bios (UEFI) then it does but many old bios based boards require a 'driver'.

Do a quick format and should take a few minutes. A full format for the size of the hard drive should take near 1 to 2 days. And the NTFS means New Technology File System. fat 32 its older and less secure that its way many pendrives are fat32 and the pricey one are able to be NTFS
