Hi,
I have windows 7 ultimate and want to upgrade to 8.1 because it is faster and fresh, but I'm trying to use the upgrade assistant which I downloaded off of microsoft but every time I run it I get this message: http://gyazo.com/416c0ac6f0822d1d6605f7baf95b89b9

I live in the UK, I don't see what the problem is?

In the window previous to what you linked, it gives the option of what to try to save from the existing OS.

Change what you selected and try again.

Assuming you have everything you want saved elsewhere, unselect that and try again.

Or possibly there is something going on with your Win 7 Ultimate install. Where did you get that Ultimate from?

I bought a disk off of ebay and it came with a code, it is an OEM disk for dell.

That might well be the problem.
If no combination of checkboxes in the Upgrade Assistant works, then that Dell OEM install is almost certainly the culprit.

If you want Win 8.1, then buy a regular license, not an upgrade.

This is why software, especially a Windows OS, from ebay is rarely a good idea.

OK, now I'm confused.

You have Win 7 installed, and the 8.1 upgrade assistant won't work. (Dell OEM from ebay)
But you also have a key for 8.1, but no install media. Where did this key come from?

A friend gave it to me via email, I'm not sure how he acquired it but it says it works but I can't install

For one....if it is already used, you can't use it as well.
For two...the screen cap above is where you buy it, not activate it.

I'm confused then, how do I use the code?

And I didn't mean to select the solution, it did it automatically.

Try the steps here:
http://lifehacker.com/how-to-create-a-windows-8-install...

Along the way, it will prompt you for the license key.
See what happens.

Actually, no. Microsoft does not make those available.

If you want to install and use Win 8/8.1, buy your own, rather than trying to rely on a license key your friend sent you in an email.
