Current configuration:

Cat5 cable running into the room for her to connect her computer to. Do not know where the other end goes, I am sure into this big black hole GrandePaw’s my age don’t understand. But when this Cat5 cable is connected to the Ethernet port on my Granddaughters laptop, all is well. Without any additional settings changes, she has very fast internet 100/100.

Next we added an Ethernet switch (model D-Link DES-1005E) that allowed her to connect her tablet to the internet at the same time her laptop is connected. All still works well.

Proposed configuration:

We now want to add wireless to the dorm room. It is not provided by the University. I have a couple of NetGear WN-802T v2 Access Points. New and/or refurbished by NetGear and never have been used. It appears we can just run another Cat 5 cable from the Access Point (just one of them) to an used port on the switch, configure the Access Point correctly (both on the wired and wireless sides) and we should have the same working configuration as above with the exception of, we now have wireless. Since she doesn’t need to provide wireless to the entire campus, I assume the 802.11A/G will work just fine for her dorm room.

I can’t figure out how to configure the Access Point. I have looked everywhere on the net and can not find a configuration like this. It is probably very simple, but I don’t want to screw up the University’s network and get my Granddaughter evicted from the dorm. Plus living 250 miles apart makes this a challenge. One can only do so much with remote access.

Anyone out there that could steer me in the right direction would sure be appreciated. Thanks in advance. GrandePaw.

Not familiar with the access point, but take the plug going into the laptop and send it to a wireless router ..... use the LAN ports as desired and set up wireless. The access point is an odd duck and a bit out of my familiarity zone.

This gives ya both options.... so if wireless goes boinky can always just plug in.

My 2 sons who just graduated said "goilz" used to come to their rooms or off campus housing put on a "pouty face" and 5 minutes later there were 2-3 guys hooking them up .... yet when my son moved off campus...

You shouldn't need to configure the access point on the dorm internet's side. Instead of plugging the line from the dorm internet to the WAN port, plug it into one of the LAN ports and you should be able to use the network in that fashion. Disable DHCP, NAT, DNS on the router to avoid conflicts with the university housing's ISP.

Lastly, not every university will allow you to set up wireless access points of your own in the dorms, oftentimes due to security reasons & rogue networks, etc. Check with the university's helpdesk if it's allowed before you proceed.

Here is the configuration guide for the wireless access points.

That said, she probably does need to DOUBLE CHECK the policies for wireless access points. There are probably specific guidelines for setting them up if they are allowed at all.

Besides if she is such a beautiful college girl, she will have geek guys falling all over themselves to help her out ... You are then off the hook.
