ASUS & MSI GTX 970 Fan Control?

Ok this might be a stupid question, but can owners of the MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G and the ASUS STRIX GTX 970 please help me out here?

I know both of them have a 0db (Zero) - mode, where the fans turn off completely. Since I'm building a silent PC, this is probably the main reason for why I'm so interested in these 2 cards.

But since I plan on overclocking the GPU (and I know the MSI has the better OC potential), I'd like to know how much control over the fans you actually have.
[ Btw did you know that the MSI GTX970 is lacking indipendent fan control? Apparently only the MSI GTX980 has this feature :( ]

1. Can you change the fan/temperature curve without erasing the 0db mode? (I've read that the ASUS Strix only goes up to 42% fan speed using auto, which may or may not limit OCing & that the fans only turn off when you're using the auto fan speeds)

2. Can you change the temperature value at which the fans start/stop spinning? (iirc ASUS Strix is pre-configured to ~65°C, the MSI to ~50-55 and tbh I think 50°C is the better choice, so I'd like to know whether or not you can adjust the threshold)

3. Which software do you use to control the fans? MSI Afterburner?

Thanks in advance :)

Ps: English is not my mother tongue, so please go easy on me :ange:

I'm pretty sure if you use a fan curve, you lose the 0db feature. This is one of the reasons I went for the MSI. I don't want to lose the silence at low loads but I didn't want to be limited by the 42% max fan speed on the Asus.

seems like we're the only ones wondering :(
[ Or maybe I posted this at an unfortunate time of the day? :ange: ]

I'd really like to be able to create a custom fan curve where the fan speed stays at 0% until around 50°C (or any other temperature of my liking)... however I've heard that just lowering the fan speed to 0% in Afterburner does not actually turn the fans off because every manufacturer has a min. fan speed set in the GPU BIOS (~25%) and it won't allow any fan speeds lower than that

Now the question remains whether or not the MSI & the ASUS Strix have a min. fan speed like that (>0% and only the manufacturer's automatic fan speeds can "overwrite" that value) or whether that min fan speed actually is =0% (and therefore can be used to turn off the fans in Afterburner when overwriting the fan speed curve)

Ps: Thanks :)

Well that sucks...
I guess I'll also go for the MSI then.

Thanks

I agree I miss the backplate, but it's a sick card. I keep my fans at 50% and I can barely hear them...pretty nice

I have a STRIX 970 and ASUS GPU Tweak let's me set the fan speeds easily, defining when you want the fans to turn on (they stay off under this temp), when you want them to speed up, and what maximum fan speed you want them to achieve up to 100%, so yeah you can fully define the curves and I like it way better than Afterburner. The STRIX is much better than the MSI card in my opinion, and has AMAZING OC potential.

Nope, you don't lose the silent when setting the curve using ASUS GPU Tweak. Don't use Afterburner with this card.

I actually have gigabyte cards now lol...

but I'm really waiting to see what happens with the 980ti now...I'd like to trade in my 2xGTX 970 Gigabytes for a single 980ti....hopefully EVGA Classy :)...I'm hoping the February rumor is true!

I have the EVGA_sc version of this card that has the 0db mode, but at idle the temps are always in the 60c zone with the fans off, which I find pretty high. I use afterburner to keep the fans at 40% minimum which keeps the card at 42c when idle. I do really like the card though. Performs very well, and even though idle temps are a tad high its never gone over 67c under the heaviest load. (but even at 40% I can def hear the fans...)

Just one question here (don't want to open a new thread):

Is there a way of controling fan speed under 40% on the STRIX 970 OC?
My problem is that, in manual mode or in user define mode (curve), I can control the fans in this manner:
- 0%
- and than the range from 40-100%

I cannot find how to control the speed between 0 and 40% :/

Also, my fans get pretty loud, even at 55-60 they are really audiable, and anything above 65% it gets noisy and with some strange vibrations. Anything?
