Hi,

I live in a shared house and have never had problems with the internet before. I usually play MMOs and ever since this one certain person has moved in the internet has been weirdly slow that even Youtube videos won't play without stopping and starting.

He spoke to me about knowing how to hack and how he said that my MMO gaming could run the internet down. When it's never been a problem before. Is there a way that he could be stealing bandwich or something? As this problem only happens when he's in, no one else.

MMO's don't use a lot of bandwidth. He's probably torrenting or streaming a lot. The only thing that would slow the internet down for a MMO is a patch. Most likely he's the problem. Seeing that it's s shared house not sure if there's anything you can do. If you pay part of the bill then you could probably argue about the bandwidth or the lack of.

If you want guaranteed internet bandwidth, then you will have to pay for it yourself and keep the modem/router under physical control in your room. Home networking is a cooperative environment. There is very little that can be done from a technical side. This is a political problem...

Is it possible to have two Routers/internet providers in a house hold as me and another house mate wanted to share one between us

Maybe/probably. It will depend on what kind of ISP service is available. It may require additional wiring from the ISP provier. It is just like having a completely separate apartment. BUT there could be billing limitations etc. You will need to check with your ISP or find an additional ISP that will support you.

it's possible to have two routers using one internet service, but that won't solve your problem.

You could definitely have two different ISPs in one household, but I am not sure if you could have two instances of the same ISP in a single address.

I guess there isn't much else I can really do then. I've just spoken to him and he said I can happily look through his computer. But now he's gone downstairs with just the OS showing, the internet is fine once again. So I guess he won't admit that it's him.

You can't have 2 Internet Accounts with the same ISP. If you're service is thru Cable then you'll need to look at DSL. From past experience they will only allow 1 account per household.

Going into his room and messing with his machine without his knowledge is NOT a good idea. Doing so would invite him to do the same and could cause further damage from within the house and possible personal damage.

It depends on who's equipment it is. If it's not his then he has no rights to tamper with it and that includes turning it off or on. He needs to find out who the bill goes to and who's equipment it is and go from there. Most likely there's no rules as far as how the internet is being used which means that the other guy isn't at fault. Sucks for others but that's most likely what's going on. He needs to talk to the person who's in charge of the bill and the equipment and go from there.

Would you like it if somebody had turned off your equipment without your knowledge? 1st thing would be WTF why is this off and then comes perhaps the, "well what else did you mess with". If the equipment is in a person's room then no he shouldn't be messing with it.

Just to look thru his computer. That's it. No troubleshooting. Just to look.

I'm arguing the point of messing with somebodies computer. If there's no torrent program running and he's not there watching a movie or listening to music then there's nothing else that needs to be touched or messed with and whom ever pays the bill needs to call the ISP.
