Would it be a waste to buy a gtx 980 if I plan on using a 1920x1080 monitor?

Solution
Those games will run at 144hz on a 970. Even if they wouldn't, it is still better because like that other guy said, it's UP TO 15% slower, while costing about 200$ less, so unless you have a burning need to spend money, it is a much better deal.

If you can afford the GTX 980 and it's $200 premium for the 15% increase in performance then go for it.

Nobody really knows what requirments the next games will demand and having the little extra performance in the bank may save you the upgrade.

If money is a major decision point the the GTX 970 would give more bang for your buck.

I currently run a OC GTX 980ti and a 144hz monitor and it creams every game I play at 1080 (BF4 Ultra). Best buy I have made but cost was not a big decision maker. The card being less stressed runs cooler / quieter as a bonus.

He meant you need a serious processor, like an i7 4770k or something lol. If you have a lower end processor, like many AMDs or an i3, you can expect to hit processor bottlenecks before you achieve that ultra high fps. At that framerate, even ram speed is a factor in performance.

980 ti? Anyway, if you want to absolutely max out games immediately get 2 970's for SLI, because while the 980 is a nice card that overclocks well and runs ridiculously cool and quiet, at ultra settings in at least a few recent games it struggles to maintain 60 fps at 1080p in anything other than just in-game benchmarks. And with DSR, you're not limited to 1080p, but can use either 1440p or 4k resolutions for rendering the game which is then adjusted to fit your display's native resolution. DSR is great, just wish there was some way to resize text like subtitles and whatnot.

Or I guess you could get 2 980's depending upon your graphics preferences and budget.
