Hello i just bought an asus z97-a motherboard for my new gaming rig and ive ordered a 4690k as well. I have read on asus's official website that a bios update is required for the motherboard to work with 4th gen CPUs. Is it necessary to update? I cannot run the pc and update the bios without a cpu. Can't it run at all without the update? Now i should clarify that i've bought the motherboard from my country and its very probable that its not factory fresh so the bios version will probably be old. What should i do? Its too late to return anything.

Unless the mobo has something like USB flashback, (this will let you flash it with just a PSU)

There is no way to update it. And yes unless the right BIOS is on the motherboard when you buy it. It is not going to post or run / turn on.

The only way you can fix it, if this is the case. Is either take it to a local PC shop and ask them if they can put a lower spec CPU in it then flash it. Then put the CPU you want back in.

Or you'll have to buy a lower spec CPU and do the above. And yes you have to update the BIOS to support this CPU.

If it's not on the mobo now / already. Thats why it says it on the ASUS site

The Z97-A has the Flashback, and these have been around long enough they should come with the newer BIOS anyway that covers the 4690K, should be fine either way :)

I have the same combo...runs fine right out of the box. They've both been out long enough were you dont need an update.
