documents can be copied into my external hard drive but cannot be copied out and keeps reportinf that file source cannot be found

rt click on the drive and then on the tools tab. In the error checking tab click Check now. On the next window be sure to enable both options then click start.
Depending on the size of the drive and number of problems found ... this could take quite a while.

Hi there Olaleru Faithful,

Your issue may be caused by bad sectors. If the solution that popatim proposed works, be sure you back up your data regularly. Once having bad sectors, even though fixed for the moment, a hard drive will not be that reliable as they will continue to appear.

Never for 1 second believe that your storage system is infallible! Important files/data always need to be backed up to separate devices. The more important the files, the more backup copies you should have of it IMO.
