If the laptop originally had windows 7 installed, it will have a sticker with the activation code on it. Possibly under the battery.
If you find it, you can download and burn a windows 7 iso to use to install.
If you do not have the activation code, you need to buy a new windows 7 copy.

1) Search for a serial code (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx) on the bottom of the laptop.
a) If there isn't one, then you're pretty much stuck. No need to read on.
b) If there is one, then know which version it is. You'll need it for later.
2) Download this:
http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-54965.iso
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
3) Download this and extract:
http://code.kliu.org/misc/winisoutils/eicfg_removal_uti...
4) Open the extracted contents of EI.CFG Removal Utility. In there you'll find eicfg_remover.exe. Run it; it'll ask you to find your Windows iso, and choose that file. Give it a second, and it's done.
5) Burn the iso to DVD.
6) Install it onto the Compaq.
7) Select the identified Windows version.
8) Reformat the entire drive if you don't want Ubuntu.
9) It'll reboot into the OOBE. Enter the serial key from bottom of PC.
10) Follow onscreen instructions.)
11) Install your drivers and all is bling.
