Bottleneck through PCI-e bus with gtx 970 sli?

I was looking at doing a gtx 970 sli setup for 4k or 1440p and my concern is that my motherboard will bottleneck the cards through the PCI-e bus. My motherboard allows for 1X16 or 2X8 setups but not 2X16 (which I assume means it has 16 lanes). Can 16 PCI-e 3.0 lanes support two higher end cards without serious bottlenecking?

yes and no .... its not MBO its your CPU even tough MBO can have 2x16 pci-e 3.0 CPU's supports only 16 lines .... there is solution you can get x99 MBO whit i7 - 5960x who supports 40 pci-e lines( http:// ), i7 - 5930K who using 40 lines to but have 6 cores and 12 threads instead 8cores and 16 threads like stronger one (but this one use higher cloak speed so its more recommended for gaming), ... thers 1 more i7 5820 who using only 28 lines so hes not some solution for your problem ... ofc they cost a lot ... actually those are most expensive processors. All LGA 1150 CPU's suport only 16 lines so even if MBO somehow have 2x 16 3.0 pci-e it wont go above 2x8
