So i'm trying to get my system to work as both a gaming rig and a plex server. At the moment my system runs at about 100 watts on idle, too high to leave it on 24/7. The solution i'm using now is putting the system into sleep mode and letting my plex client wake it whenever it needs to.

However the other day something strange happend, i put my system into sleep mode but it seemed like the system just shut down the gpu and went into some kind of low power mode. My system was using just about 20 watts and i could stream video's from my plex client. I was very happy with this but the next day i couldn't get this to work anymore and my system went back to the normal sleep mode behaviour.

I have no idea what triggered this behaviour and i haven't been able to recreate it since. Does anyone know what triggered this sleep behaviour?

I'm not what could have caused the low power mode but you could go into the Windows Power Saving profiles and set the power plan to "Balanced or Power saver" that might do you some good.

edit: Just checked in the Power Plans and in the advanced settings there's something about PCI Express saving states, Moderate for Balanced and Maximum for Power saver.
