Hi,

So, I don't know what is causing a problem I've been having. And randomly right now I can type this to you all of a sudden as it began working.

Anyway, I have a Nvidia GTX 670 2GB Gigabyte windowforce x3 and a OCZ StealthXStream 2 700W 80+ which is 4 years old at least. Today I get home from work and I login to my computer. After it gets all loaded up the screen goes crazy and freezes after I get a pink screen. I restart and same thing happens AFTER I get the crazy snow flakes and then I get a green screen and then again but I get a red screen and it goes between one of those colours constantly.

I opened my case up and attempted to diagnose the problem. I blew out all the dust with compressed air and tried again and got the same result. So after I turned it off and on a bunch and looked at it I notice my PSU was making a buzzing sound. Not crazy loud but a constant hum which I didnt hear before.

Then all of a sudden I login again and it all of a sudden works now. But, I know its going to happen again. Is my graphics card dieing or is it my old OCZ psu that needs replacing?

More about : graphics card psu dieing

from the sounds of it it is a Graphics card based problem with all those coloured screens phasing through. Power supply sounds fine even though a little old, if it were a power supply issue it tends to be a blue or black screen. I would RMA (if you still can) your GTX 670.

Your PSU should be ok but that does not deter it anyhow from the cause.

That is not of PSU problem. Whenever you see all these "snowflakes" otherwise known as artifacts and random colors on the screen it means largely your GPU memory modules are dying. I have the same stuff that happened to my on my old nvidia 8400GS card. The GPU die itself rarely fails unless you overheated it. Usually its the memory that fails to load and store the frames and causing random corruption.

Buzzing/humming noise in your PSU is the very typical coil whining noise which is normal when electricity is being amped up by the transformer coil and capacitors. If your psu is failing you would know since even the slightest power draw will immediately shut your computer down as it cannot provide that power.

I have over clocked the GPU. I have also had the GPU for over a year. I don't believe i can RMA it?

Then warranty may be gone, if the card has 1 year warranty. If you can lay your hands on another card cheaply I would try that.

That depends. Overclocking your card doesn't mean you can't rma for warranty. If its within safe limits then your manufacturer have no reason to deny you as you are not voiding anything. Especially if you bought a card from Asus and Gigabyte or MSI which they expect their consumers to overclock the cards to get the performance.

But let me ask you this before you send it for warranty. Is there a major benefit in warranteeing after 1 yr? Sending a gpu is expensive, the weight of the card and packaging alone will costs you close to $100 + a minimum waiting time 3-4 weeks before they even get back to you (which means you cant do anything in that period without your graphics card).

I think its just cheaper to upgrade your 670 to newer cards like 750ti for only couple of bucks more.

@ Meat_Loaf - Why would you go from a GTX 670 to a 750Ti? That's a major downgrade, not upgrade.

Just a suggestion if he wants something cheap and he is not doing intensive things. If he can shell out extra 200$ with that $100 shipping fee i mentioned he can get GTX 970. Or maybe go for gtx 760 or R9 285.

I just don't find RMAing anything heavy like GPU is productive, its just a waste of shipping fees.

I actually game pretty hard and love over clocking. If this continues to work I'll attempt to make it last as long as possible. Right now I'm at an hour and a half still working. I haven't yet tried a game though. If it was just a random thing Ill keep the 670 for a while and get a 980 down the road for sure..
