Legendary WoW mouse firmware

So i got my wife a new mouse for WoW and its the legendary gaming mouse from steel series. As i am installing the software it says a firmware update is required so i attempt to do the update and it fails and now the mouse is bricked. Does ANYONE know of a way to flash the firmware on this stupid thing or how to fix it? I already wrote to steel series and am waiting a reply.

its the firmware on the mouse. The mouse seemed to be working fine when first plugged in but upon software installation it prompted me for a firmware update also and it locked up during the update and now the mouse is useless. I can use my old mouse but the new mouse laser comes on on the bottom of the mouse but nothing works.

I never got an answer but did you attempt to update the mouse in windows 8?

It will work on vista and xp as well. The bricking issue is common for people who've tried to update the mouse on windows 8. The only solution is to send the mouse into steelseries to be fixed.

Here is a link to some reviews with the same issue as you. (search 'windows 8' or 'firmware' to find relevant info)

It might be a good idea, if you do decide to send the mouse in to be fixed, to update the mouse on a windows 7 machine and then see if it will work on the windows 8 machine. If you don't have the latest firmware, the extra buttons on the mouse will go to waste.

im just curious what methods steelseries is gonna use to flash the firmware on the mouse. Surely there should be a way for a customer to do it. This seems to be the only mouse they dont offer a firmware flasher for. They have it for the wireless version of this mouse but apparently they are too different for the wireless one to work on the wired one.

I'm guessing if they cannot flash the chip via computer, they have a dock station that lets them flash it with the default firmware. It's something that could only be done in factory.

If you're set on trying to recover the mouse yourself, trying installing the drivers and updating the firmware on a windows 7 machine. You just need to use another mouse during the process.

That's a shame. You should send the mouse in to steelseries for repair. At this point, it's the only way to fix it. I don't know their policy on returns but it safe to assume that they aren't going to pay for shipping.

You have to sign up for a support account here
https://id.steelseries.com/zendesk?locale_id=1&return_to=https%3A%2F%2Fsteelseries.zendesk.com&timestamp=1411875483

Another option is to return the mouse to where you bought it but most places will charge a restocking fee or refuse to take used electronics.

Steelseries support is so-so. If I had to recommend a company with good support, logitech would be it. They don't even require you send in the old mouse in order to send a replacement.

I've played LOTS of Wow and guild wars 2. A 3 button mouse is what you should be looking for. It's enough buttons so that you can assign those hard to reach keys for easy access but not so many that you may accidentally press one of them or that they get in the way.

I have yet to find a good WoW branded mouse though. The WoW cataclysm mouse I had was rather light and cheap feeling. It was pricey too.

Something like this would be good enough for WoW

They do have 5 and 6 button mice but they are pretty pricey because there are only a few of them. Heck if it works for you that's great.
