Hi, so have all the parts but 3-5 (the important ones) to makes two rigs. At present I have:

AMD 965 on an MSI 890FXA-GD70 with 4 gb (unreal) mushkin ram that the 965 memory controller can't use right.

I want the get an 8350 to overclock on air with a Scythe mugen 2 rev.b (if thats enuff)

I suck at picking mobos(+RAM for them). My track record is awwfulll.

Preferably I'd like a reliable Mobo and RAM for overclocking the 8350, and if I can do that for a price i can live with ($450-500ish all in?), I'll just toss the 965/msi mobo in the other case.

If I need to go budget and keep the MSI mobo for the 8350 (it will run it)...
I'll have to get a cheap(er) reliable 965 mobo and to run (prolly on cool n' quiet under an arctic cool/freezer? 64) in the other rig. Also in that case I'd like to spend way less too lol.

I'd need RAM for the budget rig, I'd hate to use the Mushkin (waste!) but maybe I could get fast RAM for the 8350/MSI build, it's supposed to do 2133(OC) i think, probably go less expensive?

Please advise on the best course of action, thank you :)

"If I need to go budget and keep the MSI mobo for the 8350 (it will run it)..."
You want a Sabertooth or Extreme9 Motherboard for that CPU, essentially since you want to overclock the CPU. Do not use that motherboard, MSI have poor capacitors on their AM3+ Motherboards.

With the ram query, you want to keep this mushkin ram and buy more, or attempt to mix ram (not a good idea, doesn't always work due to voltage, cas, timings and speed....all have to be the same).

The mushkin redline enhanced is 1.65v 1600 7-7-7-20. You can't get timings like that anymore. I can't buy more, though i've seen close, but mixing is bad, ur right. I figure I'll put it in the 965 rig and buy quality RAM if I can find it at a decent price for the 8350 rig. I'm running dead rising 3 with that 4gb of Mushikin in the 965/msi @ 1080p (7970) and it's smooth CPU OC'd at 3.9. That ram is magic. That game uses 2.7gig of VRAM alone. I would seriously keep it in the 8350 rig and buy cheaper RAM for the 965 if push came to shove.

Those are both $200ish boards, are they really worth replacing the msi 890. It says it has "military grade capacitors" or some jazz.

Hi-c CAP
8X Lifespan than solid Capacitor!!
Insisting on the best stability, MSI utilizes Hi-c CAPs on Military Class series. Made of the rare element Tantalum, often used on space shuttles and satellites, which sustains very high temperatures and shows an amazingly high electrical conductivity.

I guess I'm looking at the sabertooth with $99 seemingly good (1866 cuz it's max for mobo) RAM:
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL8D-8GBXM
5 out of 5 eggs (49)

DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)
Timing 8-9-9-24
Cas Latency 8
Voltage 1.5V

Tightest timings I've found, great reviews.

If I do that it's $500 + possibly a new harddrive ($1/200)

If the mobo can take the 8350, i could save lots of moneys... but would have to do more work...

Considering that I'm using a refurb board cuz the audio died, I guess I can see y replacing it is good, and I don't have to change to cpu, or reinstall software, I can just switch cooler put in other case, connect the stuff and focus on the 8350. I was considering the Formula-Z, thoughts?

Also consider I only have the one 7970, is there a smaller/cheaper board that would accomplish the same without 5 extra pci-e 2.0 slots lol

"I was considering the Formula-Z, thoughts?" - great board, though Asus ROG are overpriced the looks are one factor to consider when choosing a board. If you need that board because of what it has then go for it but if your only using one card and overclocking there are better boards for that.

"I only have the one 7970, is there a smaller/cheaper board that would accomplish the same without 5 extra pci-e 2.0 slots lol" - As said above, yes, there are plenty of other choices that can do the same job, you don't really need that board fro your uses.

Did you find the Sabertooth 990FX for $99?

Couldn't find the sabertooth for less than $200, I was referring to some seemingly sweet RAM for $99 (8gb).
I tried to post this a while ago but the site wasnt cooperating.
Soo.. Samsung 840 evo ssd 250 gb is on sale right now for $140. Get it fast? Or.. wait for black friday, pay less, maybe try for 850 pro?
See I'm thinking black friday is 7 weeks away... is it worth waiting, or is it usually only the B grade stuff u get any significant saving on?

you really don't think it's gonna drop more since the dawn of the 850 pro? I saw the asrock 990fx EXTREME9 for $195 today too (after rebate tho, but that's like like $50 off...assuming the rebate ever comes), hear it's a bitch to overclock, but otherwise awesome (12+2!). Really think waiting for black friday/weekend/week etc won't save me the cash moneys?

p.s. i just checked the store near me, the same "super deal" evo on newegg is available at my local store for $12 more - NOT on "special sale", they don't have alot of good boards tho, I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the extreme9, but the rebate isn't likely to be short lived.

p.p.s checked the even closer store: regular price for EVO is same as newegg's special, minus shippin charges. The 990fx Extreme, also the same price with same rebate. All signs point to black friday my friend, it's online for me, i ain't goin to no store and having to resist the urge to punch ppl lol(ish)... :)

I'm thinking of maybe going..(don't hit me!)..intel... it's just pci-e 3, I'd really like to use that. XMP so I don't hafta configure ram by hand. what's the best cpu (price/performance) i would want, what rivals the 8350?

pfft, hell with intel, not worth it, and i'm referring more to confusion than price (but that's expensively confusing). The only way i can devine generation without memorizing bridge names is by socket number. higher=newer (i think) .. they got a 6 core now tho...
2 Item Combo

combo
Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W Desktop Processor BX80648I75820K
$416.99
combo
ASUS X99-DELUXE LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
$429.99

Combined Total:$846.98
This Combo: $836.98

somehow i don't think black friday is gonna help with this ;)

I checked out intel rigs, i'm looking at the i5-4690k, more in my price range. Are there versions without useless onboard graphics? I would imagine they would be cheaper... - board ideas? MSI Z97-Gaming 5? The ASRock Z97 OC Formula has me drooling a bit :) The 797m OC Formula is $100 cheaper tho.. I suppose this warrants a 4790k, for futureproofing aswell

I bit the bullet and grabbed the 840 evo 250gb for $140 as it was the last day of the sale...then they extended it and now everyone else has it reg price for $140. At least I didn't pay shipping, and while i mighta saved a bit black friday, at least i get to mess around with it now. And it feels good to start the first part of the build. Altho I did put in an old dual core 3.2 for a fresh install, just for kicks to see the speed dif on a sata3... holy windows black logo screen straight to desktop batman. I may put it in the 965 and grab an 850 pro for whatever the new rig will be, price/sale willing...

Also what's with the ASRock Z97m OC Formula for $100 less, at a glance I only noticed less slots etc. Hell of a time googling for it, nothing came up.

Well, I knew less slots would mean smaller, but micro atx I did not expect. Would I be stupid to get that, and instead of spending money on a new case, just put it in an old "normal?" airflow case with CPU water cooling? My 7970 runs hotter/glitchier than it should and has a lifetime warranty.... If it fries without taking anything down with it, i'd take the r9 280(x?) they'd replace it with. Might it take the mobo down with it lol, might it fry slowly, so i can RMA before i need a fire extinguisher... hmmm. Or I could just spend $15 to improve the old cases's airflow, or get a new HAF.... mmm new HAF, spensive... But new HAF, I don't think I could allow myself to get a small HAF, it would feel blasphemous. Then Y put a micro atx in monster case lol. Paradoxical.

I just read this as well ..." The ASRock is using doublers to get 8-phases. There are really 4" disturbing. I also read a while ago that the 4+1 phase for my "gaming" board, is misleading, it's actually quite capable. of course their r other downsides to my board (MSI 890FXA-GD70), tho it auto OCs a 3.4 965 to 3.9, so it can't be that bad, other than the auto OC somehow limits my GPU slots to x8, it doesn't...or it hadn't made a difference.. til dead rising 3 started pushing the card.. time to do some experiments..Igor! fetch my goggles!

I'm so mad at intel, i was finally gonna switch back, but no, if u go with us(intel) u gotta pay for one of an array of shitty onboard graphics solutions, because you're obviously looking for the cheaper option, so pay hundreds more for our builds so you can't afford your own graphics card anyways! Yay. I'm so mad I'm boycotting intel. I'm gonna RMA my 7970 for an r9 280x, then buy another GPU for spite directed at intel. And I'm gonna buy one of those ridiculous 220w processors ....until I do some research and see that it still can't touch the intel quad core that's cheaper; to wit 4690k, funny it said it's a draw between the amd 9590 (their best) and the 4790k, but the 4690k is declared winner over 9590 :( I can't decide, Intel or AMD, they're selling the 8350 for $180 now, black friday is gonna make a dent in that methinks. Lesson learned from the EVO "sale"
