Windows 7 Lower Case "k" Not Functioning

I have no idea what else to do at this point. I have scoured the Internet for a solution and I have asked many people (the IT kind) for help. Thus far everyone is stumped on this one.

Suddenly two nights ago I turned on my Windows 7 desktop and the lower case "k" would not be accepted. I played around a bit and thought it was the keyboard since I've had the keyboard for around 10 years. So I bought a new keyboard. Problem with the lower case "k" is still present. I tried yet another keyboard, but nothing worked. So I tried these keyboards with another computer and they all worked fine.

Everything is up-to-date on my desktop as far as I can tell. Other things I have tried thus far without success are:

  • Restarting the computer

    Checking the registry

    On-screen keyboard (same problem)

    Re-mapping programs

    Different USB ports

Antivirus scans (returned some issues, but nothing resolved the issue)

Windows System Repair (showed problems, but would not fix the problems listed and I'm not sure they're the problem or not)

Uninstalled the driver and reinstalled numerous times

Checked my hot keys and sticky keys

Checked my keyboard settings and language settings for other settings (all good although I did have two other languages when I first went into the settings and I removed those)

Shift + k does give me an upper case K

Windows + k does give me a lower case k in some instances, but not in a web browser for example (really weird)

Things I have not tried:

  • Smashing with a hammer

    Melting down with a flamethrower

Formatting the PC (I really don't want to do that)

Reinstalling Windows (another thing I'd rather not do)
At this point I am certain it is not a hardware issue with the keyboard or the PC itself, but rather a system issue with Windows.

I really appreciate any ideas or suggestions anyone has!

So there were two when I first looked, but now only one shows after I uninstalled the others. I think it was just a holdover from the previously thought to be bad keyboard. HID Keyboard Device is listed only now, but when the driver installs it shows my new Logitech G510 as the driver and eventually says what it does now.

Driver Date: 6/21/2006 (I've tried updating this, but I can't ever find something newer)
Driver Version: 6.1.7601.17514
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows

Probably a generic driver at this point. Shame really, but I don't think the driver is the issue if the on-screen keyboard doesn't work for a lower case k either.

The HID Keyboard Device is the same one I have. When you install the Logitech keyboard - it is replacing the driver with the Logitech driver.

I Googled your issue - the only thing similar that was out there was an issue with the Microsoft Wireless Keyboards - the "C" key wouldn't work in lower case - and when you remove the batteries (changing them or looking for the SN in several cases), it magically fixed them.

The only thing I found with "K" was a problem with Ubuntu (they had set the "k" to show where the mouse is - in Windows it can only be the CTRL key).

I don't see anything happen when I press the "K" key. I've been looking for something to happen since this started, but sadly....nothing. At least then I may have a correlation. I tried all of the shortcuts listed and/or checked them against the letter k.

I've used Google as much as possible and came up with pretty much what you did. This seems to be one helluva fluke.

Maybe found something here - is your computer a laptop? If so, do you have the "NUM LOCK" (light on they keyboard) turned on? Try turning the num lock off (the light goes off) and then try typing. Many laptops that do not have the numbers pad on the laptop keyboard use the numbers pad overlayed on the keyboard.....it don't know if this is the fix or not....but something new....
