Hello all,

I recently purchased a Nvidia GTX 980 graphics card, through Gigabyte, and am having some trouble with the card when I try to use it.

On the first system I tried to use it on, the computer boots to BIOS, then gives a single beep, that repeats after an extended pause, and never gets past the BIOS screen. This computer worked fine with the previous card, an Nvidia 660 Ti, and works fine when using the integrated graphics from the Intel processor. However if I install the 980, I am unable to even access the BIOS setup menu, as the computer simply freezes once it displays the setup menu's splash page (system information and such).

When I plug the same card into a second computer, it boots up to the point where I can enter into Windows and work with my computer as if everything was normal. However, Nvidia's control center refuses to open while the card is installed, and the Geforce experience reports my computer as having no GPU installed. If I place that computer's original card back in, an Nvidia 650, the control center opens properly, and the Experience correctly reports the GPU. Also, Windows does not report any display adapters from Nvidia when the 980 is connected.

On both computers the power supply meets the 500W requirement from Nivida, 650W on the first computer, and 500W on the second computer. The card Nvidia logo on the card lights up properly, and the fan starts working. Both power supplies are from a reputable manufacturer.

Both computers have the most recent Nvidia drivers installed.

In both cases the card is able to display graphics, showing the BIOS screen on the first computer, and functioning as if everything was normal on the second computer, despite not recognizing it as a GPU. So it is effectively functioning as a pass through for the display, albeit a non-functioning one.

Am I correct in assuming that the card is faulty, and that I will need to have it replaced? I can't think of any other scenario that could be happening, as it fails in both computers.

Thank you

With the computer it works in, reinstall the drivers. Even though the latest driver you have currently installed is from the same bundle, the driver would have only installed components for the gpu it detected.

Try update your motherboard bios on the computer it's not working and swap the psu's around before declaring a bad card.

This happened to me with the 970 in SLI and in single, I reverted the mobo to defaults settings and that solved it for me.

I tried both suggestions, and neither made any difference, unfortunately.

Edit: The solution for re installing the drivers worked. Turns out there was something in Windows' boot settings that was preventing the drivers from installing. It appears the problem lies with my current motherboard on the first PC.

Second Edit: Solved! Updating my BIOS was the solution. It was a few months behind the most current version.
