I have an Intel Pentium G3258 and I have an MSI Z87-G45 Motherboard. I have tried to get it to 4.2 ghz but the system keeps crashing and it seems the highest I can go is 4.0 ghz. I know I have to raise the voltage, but I dont know how much to raise it by. Also I am not very familiar with this advanced BIOS. I am pretty unsure what all the overclocking settings do and the only thing I'm familiar with is the Base Clock and the CPU Multiplier. Can I get a guide on how to get it to 4.2 ghz because I know this CPU can go much higher since I have heard some have gotten it to 4.8 ghz. I do have sufficient cooling from a Cooler-master Hyper 212 EVO. Any help is appreciated.

More about : past ghz

Disable all power saving features. That's a rule of thum. The motherboard probably has +\- predefined for each setting . overclockers.net has some of the best guides out there. What are your temps and what programs are you stress testing with? Overclocking can be overwhelming at first but stick with it. It takes a while (days even weeks ) to fine tune an overclock to stability

My current temperatures with the Hyper 212 EVO is around 35 at idle and aroung 50-55 at load. I am currently waiting for my Arctic MX-4 to arrive in the mail so I can replace the stock thermal compound. Also, I have looked over the bios and what is the CPU ring voltage for?

User operation aside, the only thing I can think of is, perhaps, your PSU. If it is of poor quality, that can affect your overclocking abilities.

I think that 1.3 volts on the Vcore is the absolute maximum you want to go, although above 1.2V is something to be wary of. (Someone please correct me if I am wrong.)

All this said, no CPUs are exactly the same. There are people having issues getting above 4.2 ghz, while a handful have sailed beyond 5 ghz.
