So I'm building a gaming pc and I want to know if this will be able to play next gen games on high or ultra settings.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus Z87-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($53.98 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Video Card
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Antec EarthWatts Green 650W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer

Someone told me that a 980 and i5 is better for gaming, is that true? Also, do you think and SSD is necessary, should I spend that money on something else?

Solution
1. CPU and MoBo are mismatched ...Z97 / Z87. 4790k will work but you will need to borrow a Haswell CPU to update the BIOS. Suggest a Z97 board

2. Your PSU is too big for one 970 and too small for two ....and it's $80 ..... how bout we get you a 750 watt PSU, with better quality and performance for $30 less

3. Lets take that $30 and get you a bigger / better case that can handle SLI a bit better and having better cable management, PSU Shroud and built in fan controller,

4. If you are just gaming, you won't miss the i7 but be aware that the 4690k is clocked at 3.5 / 3.9 Ghz whereas the 4790k is clocked at 4.0 / 4.4. Bit no the i5 is not "better" for gaming, it's just cheaper.

5. This memory is cheaper and faster ... use the 2nd if you buy a CPU cooler.

6. No, you don't "need" a SSD ... a SSHD will boot ya box in 16.5 seconds compared to the SSD's 15.6 .... and ya games will be on the HD. SSHDs have built in SSDs. Of course no harm in getting both

But if ya need to cut costs, that's a great way to do it with almost no observable impact.
