I recently built my first pc. It has a 4770k cooled by Cooler Master Nepton 280L. Under full load (prime95 tests) the cpu gets above 80c at stock settings (no overclocking). Is this typical or is something wrong in the setup, namely the thermal paste?

Check that you have it installed correctly. Is the block screwed onto the CPU evenly and are the screws all the way down? Have you got the fans orientated on your radiator for optimal temperatures? I would check some reviews of your liquid cooler for any tips and information about getting the best out of it. Your temps are quite high considering the capabilities of your cooler. Good luck.

Disconnect the cooler's radiator from the case to allow you to freely rotate it. Assuming that the tubing I/O on the radiator is at the top, rotate it so they are oriented downward. Shake/tap the radiator to free any air. See if this fixes your issue. If it does, you had what we commonly know of in the liquid cooling world as an airlock - the pump cannot move any coolant/water because there is an air bubble or blockage. Since pumps only will pump water/liquid and not air, this halts the cooling and circulation. Just note: some pumps cannot be run dry or they risk impeller failure. Not certain your closed loop cooler is one of them, or if this is the case...but just an important FYI.

Thanks for your suggestions! I was actually able to install two more fans to get the rad in push/pull and that dropped the temps down to the low 50s/mid 60s for the prime 95 test. It did jump up to 75 once but only for a few moments then it was back down where I thought it should be. Thanks again!

I'm still thinking that you had an airlock...adding the fans likely cause it to dislodge. Great to hear that you are doing better now.
