Just like the title says. This will be my first gaming build and I am looking for feedback on these builds and which would be better to go with.

-My Budget is pretty high. For the initial cost I am trying to keep it around $3500. But I dont mind going a little over.

-My main focus will be gaming. And i'm not interested in surround gaming at the moment. Just single screen on a nice display.

-One of my biggest delimma's is monitor. I chose the ROG Swift because I think it will best suit my needs, and Seems a lot better than 24" 1080p.

Here are the 2 links I have picked out. Feel free to change things around and suggest things. This is what I am looking for.

With both builds I plan to add another 980 for SLI and a custom water cooled loop.

Z97 Build - http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bGHcBm

X99 Build - http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Zfb3WZ

- With this build the Rampage V or the Asus X99 Deluxe are both mobo options.

As you can see the X99 build is only about $500 more than the Z97 build. But is going X99 for gaming completely dumb? I realize that I will see very little to no performance gain currently. But how about in 6 months-1 year? Will I be glad I did it? Or would I wish I stayed with Z97?

Thanks for all the help.

Both the builds look exciting. With budget not being an issue, I'd go with X99, surely it won't have much impact for a couple years (atleast) vs quad core i7, but it should be an overall beneficial build just for the fact that haxa core is better than quad core, even if only by 1-2 FPS right now. You surely wouldn't regret it. Great choice on monitor, have you though about going straight up with a 4k display? You wouldn't enjoy multi 4k (if you wish to go surround in future) with SLI 980 though, its that crazy demanding. So I guess ROG swift is a great choice and even in surround, would give you comfortable ultra FPS in SLI.

Avoid EVGA cards with ACX 1.0 cooler, they have flawed design which makes them run hotter and louder. SOC G1 is...

Avoid EVGA cards with ACX 1.0 cooler, they have flawed design which makes them run hotter and louder. SOC G1 is the best 980 right now overall, from looks to power to cooling and quietness. I see you have many components already purchased, so I'd play around to get the best value/money with what's left, without compromising on performance.

MSI and Asus are great too, MSI particularly is the quietest and has most OCing potential. But G1 IMO is the best.

You may want to replace the Headphones with Audio Technia M50 or M50X, great headsets, amazing sound quality. Or Razer Tiamet for some great surround experience, depends on you though. I'd get the Tiamets.

Fine choice on other components I'd say. HUMOUNGOUS MoBo, great PSU, fine memory sticks. Looks to me like a mamoth gaming machine. It should look something like this:

Nothing much changed, a major one being the GPU and headsets (still depends on you). You don't need that extra case fan, its already well ventilated.

Wow thanks for the awesome and detailed reply. Not nitpicking just want to ask you a few questions about what you posted.

First, I have put a lot of thought into 4k gaming, And to me it just seems too early. I guess my question would be how well would SLI GTX 980's push a 4k monitor? Everything I have read is saying that your lucky to see 60FPS@4k. This is why I picked the ROG Swift, It's 1440p which is a step above 1080, it's 144hz, and has G-Sync. But as you can tell i'm still open to suggestions. With 1440p I know that I wouldn't have any FPS problems for at least a year or two. But at 4k im not so sure.

I have seen and heard good things from the G1. A lot of people are still talking about the Asus Strix card. I wont be purchasing for another 20-30 days so I have a little bit of time to wait. Opinions on the Asus Strix?

The headphones, I had originally picked out the Tiamats. However everything I was reading was saying that there is no point in getting them if you're not getting a high end sound card to push them. Would I have any problem running them with onboard sound? If so then what is a good sound card?

Also thanks for the fan suggestion. After looking at it again you're right. Especially being that I may run my H100i in a push/pull config if i'm not happy with the temperatures.

One last thing, Is the Rampage V worth the extra $100? The deluxe seems like the common choice in X99 builds at the moment.

Thanks Again!

4k seems to me like an immature tech right now, you won't get very comfortable FPS with a single card, around 50-60 with 2 of 'em and don't you think about tri monitor with it! And 2k on other hand will produce a comfortable 60+ FPS on single card and INSANE 90+ on two, and you always have the option to hook up another or maybe even 2 (in the future ofcourse) and stay afloat with enjoyable FPS. The problem with 4k is, its not what I call a gamer's choice, 2k looks like a sweet spot for enthusiast gamers, with the option to go multi display in future while not requiring extravangent amount of power required for multi 4k (can't even think about a config doing that comfortably). And the future is even more uncertain, I'd stay with the best 2k in the market.

Strix is good at everything, best at nothing particular (except style you can say). MSI OCes better, so does G1, both are cooler, and G1 has backplate (for looks) too! MSI is the quietest, then G1, then Asus. I've no particular reason to go with Stix tbh, other than the looks.

The onboard sound card is leaps and bounds better than most $50-80 cards on which the headsets are said to play 'optimally', the cards in high end Asus MoBos are great, absolutely fine for Tiamets. If you however must get a sound card (which's not a compulsion in any way), Xonar DX are great cards.

Well, both MoBos are extremely good and you can't go wrong with either, I'd get Deluxe, which's better than 99% of other X99s in most ways, Rampage series is like the most extreme form of extremism! Of no particular use over Deluxe in gaming. I'd get Deluxe, RV has no particular reasons to be the better choice over Deluxe IMO.
