Can a dead SD card still read files?

Hello,

I have a 64gb micro SD in my galaaxy S4. I reached capacity a while ago, but when i try to delete files they reappear in a few hours. This happens regardless of the file type.

My first course of action was to reformat it. I was able to backup my files to my PC using an adapter without any problem. I threw it back into my phone to format. After I click format it goes through the steps, but it doesn't erase any of the data like it says it will. It just reloads the SD card with the nearly 58gbs that were on it orignally.

From there I put it back into the adapter and tried formatting it on my PC to find out that windows can't format anything over 64gbs. I downloaded this tool (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/eula_windows/) to finish the job, but it doesn't recognize the sd card in the same adapter i used to transfer the files just an hour before.

Is it possible that my SD card is dead (or dying) since I'm still able to transfer and access the files on any device? Would trying to format it on a MAC make a difference? If I did format it on a MAC would it then still function on my galaxy s4 if the formatting was successful?

I haven't contacted support at ScanDisk yet so any help from the community will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Keith

Do you have synch enabled? If the backups exist on the computer - it could be synching from the PC. Make sure it is disabled. I have wi-fi enabled synching on my S4....

I would format the SD card in the S4 - not the PC - just to make sure it is properly formatted for your phone.

I have sync's enabled on my phone, but not for the SD card. I didn't have a backup of the data until now when I plugged it into the computer.

When it's in the phone I can access anything from the SD card ( play every song, view every picture, access documents play the games that are stored on it). When I try to format it, it says unmounting SD card, then erasing data on SD card. This only take about a minute though which seems odd for a card this size. When it automatically unmounts the card, then recognizes the card and the data that was on it.
