Hi
I have a 5 year old pc and can't decide whether to upgrade and try to squeeze a couple more years out of it, or to just start afresh now. I'm currently using a core 2 quad q8300 with 4gb ddr2 ram and a xfx 6870 1gb gpu. Ive seen a good deal on a sapphire r9 280 3gb card. I'm just wondering if it's worth the upgrade that'll cost me ~£100 (with tradein) or whether it'll be bottlenecked by the cpu and ram I already have?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I would suggest starting fresh. If you give me your 'start fresh' budget I can show you what's the best you can do. There are some parts you may be able to reuse such as the optical drive, Case, and possibly the PSU depending on what make / model it is.

The thing about upgrading yours is that it will help, but won't help as much as it should do.

If you don't want to spend too much then I suggest just a GPU upgrade and then reuse that new GPU in a year or two when you build the new system.

Starting fresh would work out a lot better. If you're waiting until Christmas I wouldn't really get set on a build as prices will most definitely decrease.
