Pls ans me : buying a new UPS

Hello......I have one question about my PC wattage....my PC is

AOC e2043 1600x900 VGA monitor
intel core i3-2120 processor 3.3 GHz
XFX AMD radeon R9 270x 2GB GDDR5
Gigabyte H61M-S2P motherboard
1 TB Seagate hard disk
6 GB of 1333 MHz RAM
Corsair VS650 psu

pls tell me how much wattage consumption can be done by this system at most.....should I buy any 700 watt UPS.....also tell me which plug point I should use to use it safely...is it an 15 amp??? ( voltage is around 230 V)

Hi
If its a UPS you are talking about then a 700 Watt one would be fine.
Well 230V supplying 690 Watt would draw 3A so any socket that can supply more than 3 Amp would be OK.

Hello,

An 600VA UPS can output 350W - 400W; I suggest go for at least an 1000VA UPS. Of course, you can use a good quality 600VA UPS (APC), but you'll have 2-3 min back-up time at most.

UPS - Uninterruptible Power Supply

PSU - Power Supply Unit

For a power supply:

i3-2120: 65W TDP, around 82W consumption at +12V = 6.8 Amps (efficiency 80%);
Motherboard: 30W (+5V, +3.3V, RAM consumption included);
270X: 150W TDP, around 185W at +12V = 15.5 Amps; if you want to overclock the card, add 15%-20%, so 220W = 18.5 Amps;
HDD: max. 17W (+5V/1A, +12V/1A);
DVD: max. 25W (+5V/1.5A, +12V/1.5A);
4 fans: +12V/2A.

Bottom line: at least +5V/10 Amps, +3.3V/10 Amps, +12V/30 Amps, which means a very good 450W PSU, running at its limits (recommended: 500-550W). Your PSU has +3.3V/20A, +5V/20A, +12V/50A, so plenty of power.

For an UPS:

Your system draws at most 450W; in worst case scenario, your PSU has an efficiency of 80%, so the consumption from the wall is: 450W/0.8 = 562.5W ; the PSU has active PFC, so 562.5/0.99=569W.

The monitor: max. 25W.

Standard desktop active speakers: max. 10W.

Total: 604W

The UPS power is given in VA; the simplest relationship between VA (apparent power) and W (real power) is:

P(W) = S(VA) x PF, where PF is the Power Factor. Standard UPSes uses an output 50Hz/60Hz power transformer, with a PF depending of the load/build quality (between 0.6 and 0.8; I use the median value of 0.7). So we have:

S = P/PF = 604/0.7 = 862 VA, that's why I recommended at least an 1000VA UPS.

The good manufacturers lists both power values, to be much easier for customers to make their choice.

Hi Cristi72, I am thinking of buying an AMD fx 8350 ( I want to overclock it) and a M5A99FX PRO R2.0 Motherboard.....I anay also have to install a Cooler master Hyper 212 evo cpu cooler.....nd increase my RAM upto 8 GB..........Will my psu be able to handle these....??? thank u again

Your system will increase its power consumption with 100-150W, but a good 1000VA UPS will suffice.

However, why don't you go for an i5-3570 (or i5-3570K, if you want to overclock)? It is supported by your motherboard and it will give you more performance in gaming than an FX-8350 while having much lower power consumption (77W TDP vs 125W TDP). The FX will be better only when using highly threaded applications (lots of video renderings, professional applications).

I know an i5 seems expensive at first, but going with the FX it means that you must also change the motherboard (a good motherboard I must add) and do a new OS installation, so the adding cost will be higher:
