Possibly Faulty Motherboard/CPU

Hi all,

I replaced my stock Intel cooler for my i5-4670k with a Corsair H100i.

While installing, I dropped my CPU from the board to the table I was working on (so not a great height) I didn't think much of it as there's no pins to bend and they're generally quite sturdy. Other than that the installation went fine - I plugged the cables in for the fans and the cooler itself and started up the computer - no beeps - great I thought.

However since my computer has become almost unusable. Here are a list of issues:

-Random BSOD
-Mouse begins to "lag/stutter" and then the PC freezes (no crash)
-My monitors will turn off as they receive no signal, however the PC stays on (requires a hard restart)
-It will randomly just restart itself, no errors or BSOD
-Games will stall at 1fps

Like I said, this is all random - sometimes the computer runs completely fine without issue, however rare that is.

Here are my specs:

Operating System
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i5 4670K @ 3.40GHz
Haswell 22nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3
Motherboard
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. MAXIMUS VI HERO (SOCKET 1150)
Graphics
BenQ XL2720Z (1920x1080@144Hz)
PL2473HD (1920x1080@60Hz)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 (ASUStek Computer Inc)
Storage
1397GB SAMSUNG HD154UI (SATA)
232GB Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB (SSD)

If you could provide some help that'll be great, I'm at a loss as what the definitive problem is.

Cheers

Well I'm glad that you got it fixed at least. xD
Please "best solution" me if you felt like my messages was any helpful to you, though the problem seemed to be something different. x)

Hello i own the exact same cpu/mobo/cooler combo. ;)

Your HERO board has a two digit display that will display a code for different type of errors and states of the pc, have you tried gathering some info from that when you encounter one of the above issues? The manual comes with a wide list with all the different codes which will let you "decode" what the digits mean.

Try gathering info from some of the different scenarios, then look them up in the manual, and/or post them here so i can check them in my manual. Might just be enough to explain your problem, though you'll have to be fast sometimes, so if you don't have a windowed side panel, you might want to leave it off or loose so you can check the code.

Try updating to the newest bios, might be able to solve it.

Have you tried clearing RTC? To the left of your "DirectKey" on the mobo you have a 3-pin connector with a "connector" or "jumper" on pin 1-2, pin 1-2 means a normal startup, if you place it on 2-3 and start your pc, it will clear RTC and shut down. I did this once when my pc didn't even post and it worked perfectly afterwards. Will delete all custom settings in bios too. And no "connector" on 1-2 and your pc won't start normally.

The code says A0 which I understand means it's perfectly ok!

I have since removed the watercooler and the computer is almost working correctly. However every now and then I get microstutters, my mouse pauses for half a sec or so and my music playing "skips" with a really horrible noise.

I'll try updating the BIOS, see if that helps. I'm almost certain it isn't the CPU as prime95 has ran through fine without issue.

I'll also attempt clearing RTC as you've suggested - I'll let you know what happens!

*UPDATE*

Well updating the BIOS hasn't helped... maybe it is the CPU? Issues like these are very annoying!

Okay, is it A0 with every type of issue? or just the first you encountered?

Just update directly to the newest bios build, think it's version 1505, see if that works, if not, then clear RTC. before next pc startup, like i explained above.

This is most likely a motherboard problem then, might be a little chance it's the memory.

I hope it works out for you with just the bios update/RTC clear ;)

It goes through a lot of codes then gets to A0 once it enters Windows. I have the latest BIOS build, still having problems. I've also cleared the RTC like you suggested.

I also swapped out the RAM but same problem.

PC is just randomly lagging / locking up. I've even tried swapping out graphics cards :O

Hmm i think you'll have to send back the CPU then.

Sounds like you check the digits at your next startup after a crash? Maybe i didn't make it clear that you'll need to check it when it crashes/freezes, it will only give info about the current state of the system, not that from the last crash.
Don't know if it also gave you A0 at the moment it crashes, but it might not detect any issue when it's something like a freeze or a 1fps ingame, or a black screen.

I don't think i can help you any further, i would just RMA the CPU at this point. :/

After all that heartache - I discovered the solution...

There was a bent CPU pin /facepalm

I hate it when the solution is a very obvious one :)

But it's fixed! Hooray!
