Hey!
So i don't know much about setting up a build, and what goes with what, but this is what I have to work with:
CPU: AMD Phenom ii x6 1090T
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3
Memory: 2x2gb 2000 Mhz
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6870
Harddrive: 1tb 5400

Okay, so it's a pretty old build, and what I'm wondering is just, is it worth upgrading on? Will there be any bottlenecks etc.?
My thoughts was, buying 2x4 gb of ram, the gtx 970, and perhaps a 250 gb ssd.

Please let me know what you think. Anything I should be aware of and stuff like that,

What are the other specs of your PC though may I ask? And the kind of games you play?

The bottleneck wouldn't be too bad as your processor is somewhat 20-30% faster than an FX 6300. What are the other specs of your PC though may I ask? And the kind of games you play?

I've been playing some of the demanding games from 2 years ago, but it is really starting to show it's age with newer games, like the new assassins creed, even at lower settings. The goal is to have a build that runs new demanding games at high settings, and get at 60 fps.
My psu says 700w, what other specs do you need?
And thanks for replying btw

May I just ask what brand that PSU is? Did you custom build your PC? The GTX 970 absolutely destroys games at 1080p so there wouldn't be much to worry about. The GTX 970's performance is very similar to the 780ti if not better.

If you're gaming at 900p however, an R9 270x ($150) or GTx 760 ($180) would be a big upgrade from your current GPU and could run most games ultra, smoothly with no problem. And those cards wouldn't be facing bottleneck issues like the GTX 970 :)

The Thuban hexcore is not 20-30% faster than an FX 6300

What jumps out at me is the 5400rpm HDD, so your SSD will address any disk I/O, and certainly boost your load times.

The GTX 970 will provide quite a boost in your gaming but will held back by the X6 in some of the 'usual suspects' games.

More RAMs is always nice, but if your PSU is more than 3 years old I'd spend some cash there to be safe with the new video card.

^ sorry :p  I saw that on some post about how its single core performance was 20-30% better?

And yeah, in the CPU intensive games I guess you would have a bit of a problem there then!

It is a custom build pc, but the parts where put together by the store.
I couldn't locate the psu brand, but yea, the psu is about 3 years old.
But will the gtx970 be bottlenecked in such a degree that i should go with a cheaper gpu?

I suspect the increase in frames that you will see will be outstanding even in games that tend to be restricted by the X6.

If you have concerns about the PSU, download and run a stress test with OCCT. At the end of the test a window will open with various charts that show the power delivery along each volt line. If the 'ripple' of current is outside operating parameters it's certainly time to upgrade to a new PSU to go along with your new video card.
