My motherboard manual calls for the second gpu to sit right next to it -blocking airflow- even though theres room for there to be a gap. Does it matter or can you seat the second one anywhere?

More about : thinking sli seating question

Depends on the mobo but if the manual says adjacent slots, they likely have a reason, probably because the 3rd slot is only a PCIx4 or PCIx1 slot. You need PCIx16 or PCIx8 slots for SLI.

you can seat the second one anywhere as long as:

a) the link is phsically x16

b) the link is didgitaly/electrally running at x16 or x8

c) the cards are close enough for the sli bridge to connect

Incorrect, You can only use the designated slots.
