GTX 780 6gb showing up as 3gb

Hello everyone,

So I recently built a new computer and tossed in a gtx 780 6g EVGA graphics card.
My concern is that when I run CPU-Z, it only shows it being at 3gb. So I called EVGA and they told me to run GPU-Z. Sure enough, using GPU-Z showed the 6gb which was relieving but everything else still only shows 3gb. For example, running the Valley Benchmark that came with the video card only shows 3gb and Can You Run It also only shows it at 3.1gb. So I guess my question is, do I really have 6gb? Why would it show as 6gb with GPU-Z but with other things like I mentioned only show 3gb?

Any insight on this would be extremely helpful. I paid for the 6gb, I want to make sure that I'm getting as close to it as possible.

Thank you for your time and help.

Good morning,

I would recommend opening up the Nvidia Control Panel, then clicking on system information. Can you copy and paste that information into this thread for me to review?

Based on the information pulled from the Nvidia control panel this confirm that you have a 6GB model. Can you post a screen shot of CPU-Z? Have you tried updating to the latest version?

Thanks for the information, I'm going to pull this model and test today. I have two more suggestions, first is try updating your driver: http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/344.11/344.11-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql.exe. The second is to install Precision: http://www.evga.com/precision/ and see what is reporting. You can double click on the graph to see what is being reported.

Ok so I updated my driver and downloaded and ran Precision. Didn't know where to really look at but under Memory Usage, it has a maximum of 6144 value, so I am assuming that is reporting the 6gb. Still showing up differently with other applications.

With Nvidia and Precision both displaying properly it is a good sign. [strike]From the sounds of it, the third party software is simply reporting the memory incorrectly. There shouldn't be any issues with performance as your Heaven score is right in line with that model. [/strike]

It just makes me feel a little uneasy. Even DXDIAG only shows 4095mb. I built this computer to push my animation workflow and I definitely want the most out of it, especially for the price.

My apologize I responded to quickly. After further review we were able to reproduce the same readings in the same applications. I would like to re-assure you that as long as Nvidia is reporting 6GB the video card is performing perfectly normal. I am having our product team review this further to determine the cause/fix. I will be responding back once I have an update.

After much review and testing we have confirmed that this reporting error happens with any video card over 4GBs of video RAM. We were able to reproduce with a GTX Titan, 6GB 780 and Titan Z. Each model video card we tested, in games and benchmarks, matched performance results even with the software error. At this point the software applications need an update to correct how it's reporting the video card RAM, with the higher models. I hope this information helps.
