So this has been a relatively stable machine for the last 7 to 8 months (I built it Decemeber 2013).
Today while it was idling, Firefox and VLC media player being the only open applciations, I lost monitor signal. Restart worked only for a few minutes before losing signal again.
I removed the graphics card (Radeon 7750) and switched to the integrated. However this too lasts only for 15 minutes before losing signal.
I ran some long music and waited for the crash, and the music stops as well indicating it wasn't a problem with just hte video signal. The pc fans and lights keep running even with the no signal.
Running on my linux parition (Fedora 32 bit) gives slightly longer times before it crashes.
I ran memtest 86 but it crashed (no signal) about 25% through.
I don't have acess to another desktop pc to test out whether it is solely the RAM. Is there anything I could do to try to fix it? Does removing the CMOS battery help?
Motherboard is an Asus 760GM-P23
CPU: AMD FX 6100
Memory: 1xCrucial Ballastix 8gb DDR3 1333(?)

I am thinking of buying a cheap $45 dollar RAM stick to test if if is the ram, is this necessary or is it likley to be something else thats wrong?

I suspect you have a failing power supply. You have a modest system, so finding a cheap supply to test that theory would not be too difficult. I assume you opened the case to see if dust or anything has built up too much and has stopped or slowed any fans. I assume you made sure your cpu cooler is correctly mounted. It sounds like heat is an issue.

Thanks for replying, I don't think its a heating issue since I usually ran my computer with speedfan open and i don't remember it going over 60 at idle recently. Just tested the temperatres(couldn't figure out how to get software sensors wokring on linux) so I opeened case and touched the cpu heatsink and ram heatspreaders they appear to be their normal temperatures.

What you said about the PSU might be true, its a pretty much a noname brand (I have a spare one that I can get later today) I will try swapping them and seeing whether it stablizes.

Thanks!

I never really did find the exact cause, I replaced the power supply with another, reseated the ram and power connectors and it's been stable for the last 24 hours. I did manage to corrupt my windows install yesterday, probably due to it shutting down one too many times while windows was recovering from the earlier shut downs. Managed to backup all the important files through my linux parition and reinstalled windows.
Thank you!
