* I only have a 500w power supply so please don't say just get the r9 280x *

The 280 is a winner for me. It is less expensive and performs just about the same as the 760 and it does perform better in some games.

A 500w cannot power a 280X or a 280 but a 285 it can

where i am the 760 is cheaper by about £10, so does that change anything?

500w is enough although it would be cutting it close with a 280X so I would recommend at least 600W or even 550W. This is just a precaution I'd take to avoid bricking my entire system.

The 280 is worth the £10 extra over the 760.

Whats the make and model of the PSU? a good 500w PSU will be fine for a 280 or a 760, a poor quality one will not. The 280 is usually the better option of the 2. That extra 1Gb of vram on the 280 may come in handy with newer games.

Then your PSU will power a 280. I'm still recommending an upgrade to atleast a 550W, though.

Then you will be fine with a 280, just like I said. But I would personally upgrade my PSU just o be on the safe side.

okay, seeing as i build my pc the other day i do not want to change psu already(gpu died 3 days after purchase and had to be returned) so would you think getting the 760 would be a better idead, is the performance decrease much worse or is it just a little bit worse than the 280?

The 760 isn't necessarily 'worse' than the 280 but for value, the 280 is better. So in your case, if you won't upgrade your PSU, go with the 760. It won't let you down :)
