Gtx 970 SLI.
As reviews notice, you can easily over clock the 970 to become a 980.
Add another overclocked 970 and it's like a 980 SLI

Depends on your graphics and spending preferences. Do you want to run everything in ultra at 1080p or higher resolutions, and don't want to spend another 550 dollars (for the time being) for SLI? Then get 2 970's.

I don't think I'd recommend a single 980 over 2 970's to anyone who isn't thinking about the long term with SLI.

I have a chance to upgrade from a gtx 570. Its now or never as its a gift from my brother to me. I play at 2560x1080 resolution. So either GTX 980 or EVGA GTX 970 with ACX cooler.

That's cool, yeah, 2 970's. I think some people were having issues with those EVGA's, maybe look into it before buying them.

EVGA has an issue with placement of their coolers on the 970 cards. Only 2/3 heatpipes actually make contact with the IHS itself, so they tend to run louder because of this. They are by no means inferior, however they simply arent as good as the ASUS STRIX or MSI models.

I'm personally choosing to go with a single 980 for the time being as it provides a bit more performance than my now sold GTX 670 SLI configuration and more memory. For me, I am looking at adding another 980 next year when Intel's Skylake releases. Additional driver enhancements may make SLI even better. I was experiencing micro-stuttering in some games (seems its 50/50 whether or not you notice it), but I did. I was also hitting vram limits on my 2gb cards.
