Video signal cuts in and out on 720p TV from 9800GTX

I just hooked up my old PC to my 37" LG 720p TV to run as a home theater rig. That system is running an Intel Q6600 with 6GB of RAM and an older Nvidia 9800 GTX, hooked up via DVI-HDMI cable into the TV's HDMI port, and Windows 7 64 bit.

The thing looks absolutely beautiful when I install windows, but as soon as I update my Nvidia driver (manually or via Windows Update, I've tried both), I get a weird issue: displaying only the desktop, everything remains gorgeous, but as soon as I open any window with lots of white background space, even the resolution adjustment screen, I get an ongoing "flicker" of signal loss, with the signal coming back in very short bursts so that I can't even see what I'm doing.

The "flicker" results in a black screen, then back to desktop for a second or two, then black screen again that typically lasts long enough for the "no signal" indicator to pop up on the screen. The only thing I can do at that point is exit all windows and then the desktop comes back and, again, remains fine.

I tried turning the resolution down from native to 800x600, and it didn't help. I looked and looked and can't seem to find anyone with the same problem. I don't have the "overscan" problem I keep seeing, and everything looks like it should be absolutely perfect until I open a window. Any ideas?
