I'm stuck on what HDD to use for a pc build I'll be keeping on 24/7 it's a gaming pc and plex server so it will need to be decently fast I'll be using 4 HDD along with one SSD.

So would I be best off using wd black, red, red pro, or something else entirely?

Solution
Hey there, Bradley!

Have you considered getting a NAS? This way you will prevent your PC from being ON all the time, while the NAS takes up that responsibility. You will also be able to access it all the time and to connect it with your plex server and gaming PC.

When we are talking about 24/7 running drives, WD Red drives are indeed the solution.
They have the TLER feature (time-limited error recovery), which prevents the RAID/NAS configuration from dying and saving you from rebuilding it every time a drive failure occurs.

Since your PC build is all about gaming, there I'd put a WD Black drive.

This drive is designed for demanding applications and gaming, giving you fast write/read speed. It is pretty fast with 7200 RPM and 64 cache that will deliver quite the gaming performance.

Having a NAS with WD Reds and a gaming PC with WD Black, you will have everything connected with access to all your data, without sacrificing your gaming performance.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi again, Bradley!

You've done quite well with the build. You've chosen a really good CPU , everything is compatible. The specs are enough for a plex media server to transcode mutiple 1080p streams. It looks pretty decent to me. Maybe, I'd add an SSD for the OS or caching and I'd call up on Tom's community to get more opinions on it, because here you can find a lot of professionals with constructive feedback about these things. I haven't build a NAS just yet :D
As for links you can check out to learn more, I can suggest:

I guess the only thing that's left to decide is how you are going to configure the storage?

Hope this helped. :)

Thank you! I'll look into the SSD, I'm now pretty set on the separate NAS and gaming pc instead of doing it all in one, wanna check out my gaming pc and throw tour options in on that?

Okay this is the gaming build I'm working on

[CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($279.99 @ Micro Center)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI Z97-GAMING 7 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($174.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory ($174.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($196.97 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 4TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($234.03 @ Amazon)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card ($355.91 @ Newegg)
Case: NZXT Phantom (White) ATX Full Tower Case ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($166.68 @ Amazon)
Optical Drive: LG WH16NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer ($54.99 @ Amazon)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series SP120 High Performance Edition (2-Pack) 62.7 CFM 120mm Fans ($27.98 @ OutletPC)
Total: $1841.51

I plan on getting most the big name games that come out (just about anything honestly I've found few games I don't like lately) but atm all I have is a laptop so mainly my account consists of KOTOR2 and games of that nature.

Looks pretty awesome!

It should be more than enough for the games to come! Hoping they will make KOTOR3, I bet. ;)
I'd suggest to check out the voltage on the RAM and CPU some more.
I personally don't think it's going to be a problem that the RAM's 1.65 v exceed the CPU's 1.5v, but sometimes manufacturers that might claim that this voids the warranty on their products. So better be careful with that.
Other than this, everything else looks great.
I'd even put a massive monitor to experience everything that this build has to offer! :bounce:

Hope I was helpful to you!
Happy computing and post some pics when it's done!
