Updated

Good morning (in Australia at least)

I have just updated this, as I had a couple of the symptoms incorrect. :)

I have been an IT professional in the past - but a long way short of an expert - just a drip under pressure! :)

I have an odd symptom that I have not yet managed to understand.

I recently had a short in my PSU. (I had just cleaned it and oiled the bearings in the fans. When I reassembled the PSU, a small fragment of metal from the screw thread had unknowingly come loose and shorted out the PSU on boot.)

I replaced the PSU, but now have a situation where if the system goes into hibernation (and I've just found shutdown) , it won't restart when pressing the power button (though it does comes out of sleep).

When I press the power button, all of the LEDs on the system momentarily flash, but the system doesn't turn on. The LEDs on the peripherals remain on, no post, no fans, nothing - which to me indicates some sort of automatic protection mechanism.

I then have to unplug the PSU until all of the peripheral LEDs turn off, (i.e. capacitors in the PSU discharge). The system may start - or the LEDs may flash again, or I may have to unplug it all again.

I suspect somehow the PSU (when it shorted) has damaged the motherboard, but I am confused by the symptom.

I have reset the bios back to default, no difference. (I have even reset the bios on the motherboard)
The bios was updated a long time ago to the latest vers.

I have unplugged everything and re-plugged them back in. (though I might do this again a few more times to make sure :) )

If I shut down the system from within Windows, the system will reboot. If I restart the system from within Windows, it will reboot. From what I can tell. (I only use hibernation to shut the system down after processing a long task during the night - to conserve power.)

I have just also found a further issue that may be associated. I have had a couple of "unexpected errors" after hibernation. The system has popped up a message after starting indicating this.

bugcheck code 0x0000000A
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Parameter 1 is the memory address that was referenced when the error occurred.
this was 0x0
Parameter 2 is the interrupt request level (IRQL) when the error occurred.
this was 0x2
Parameter 3 is "0" if the memory access was a read, and "1" if a write.
this was 0x1
Parameter 4 is where the code attempted this memory access.
this was 0

The memory check that I did using the windows installation disk was normal.

This hasn't really helped a lot, but I am now suspecting that there might be multiple issues. The display card has never been that good in this system, and the latest drivers seemed to cause problems, so i have been using the driver that came with the system board.

So I could likely have a display card "memory" problem as well, or some other issue.

Here is a brief note of my system:

Asus systemboard: P5G41C-M LX
CPU: Core 2 Duo E6700
Display: Gigabyte: GV-NX85T512HP
RAM: 4Gb Kingston ??model
New PSU: Coolermaster Thunder 600W Active PFC
Win 7 x64

Anyone with ideas as I am a quite lost now and no further on.

Thanks kindly for your advice.

a "confused" Greg.

Hello Greg_R make sure you have the additional 4 pin PCI-Molex conector from the psu connected to the board, have you made a hardware change lately instead of your PSU? Maybe your Ram is faulty? Check the work with only a module at a time!
As far as I know, if you usually hibernate your computer, the Ram doesn't discharge the information and after many time working "continuosly" without rebooting that's usual, maybe that's your case? Not good to hibernate so frequently, and never! when storm approaches :(
Tell us your checks, thinkings and results, heheh!

Hi gliterman,

sorry for my slow reply, I am a quite ill at present.

>>>4 pin PCI-Molex conector from the psu connected to the board,

Yes have checked, unplugged and checked again. No change was found.

>>>have you made a hardware change lately instead of your PSU?

No, everything is exactly the same unfortunately.

>>>Maybe your Ram is faulty?

I did an extensive check with the windows disk, and no faults were found.

>>>>Check the work with only a module at a time!

I must say I didn't do this, but will today. I presumed that whether one or two modules were inserted, that a thorough memory test would be adequate?

>>>As far as I know, if you usually hibernate your computer, the Ram doesn't discharge the information and after many time working "continuosly" without rebooting that's usual, maybe that's your case?

I don't usually hibernate, but if I am processing video over night, I will allow the PC to hibernate, and reboot in the morning, then shut down.

My understanding with hibernate, was that it stores everything on the HDD before shutting down. However, as I have now found that the computer won't reboot sometimes even if it has been shut down properly, I am starting to consider it as not so much related to hibernation, but a PC hardware fault in general. I just haven't found out what hardware fault yet.

I am going to strip the computer of all unessential hardware and see if this still occurs. (I should have done this earlier, silly me, but haven't been well enough to spend hours on this problem :0 )

>>>Not good to hibernate so frequently, and never! when storm approaches :(

Lots of people comment on sleep and hibernation (on this and other fora), but until now I have never had a problem with it. I don't really understand issues with hibernation to be honest.

These days I really only work on my PC and those of my family and friends - so I am quite out of touch.

thanks for your comments though.
Greg.

Sorry I will just re-add the main symptom to reduce any confusion.

When I press the power button, all of the LEDs on the system momentarily flash, but the system doesn't turn on. The LEDs on the peripherals remain on, no post, no fans, no HDD start, nothing - which to me indicates some sort of power problem with the motherboard/PSU.

So in other words, the system won't start at all.
