PS3 HDD as side drive?

So I was recently taking apart my slim PS3 and was wondering if I could use the 120GB HDD thats in the console as a side drive for software & things that are easily replaceable?

Do you mean you want to use it like spare external hard drive?

Oh ok ty. IK that 120gb drives arent expensive at all but I have this extra drive just laying around so might as use that just wasnt sure If I would be able to do it. I still have to format it like every other drive right?
