Will a G3258 automatically be recognized on a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-GAMING 3 motherboard or will i need to purchase a older CPU first to update the bios?

No, you should be fine. Z97 boards come pre loaded with support for those CPUs. It was released to complement the Haswell refresh and for Broadwell CPUs. The CPU you are talking about is part of the Haswell refresh so its preloaded to work with it.
