I'm currently looking for a good mechanical keyboard for my gaming rig. the keyboard has to meet the following criteria.

  • Must be mechanical
    Wireless
    Touchpad built into the keyboard
    customizable backlighting

It doesn't need to have macro keys, but that would be an welcome feature. I don't have a set budget, just want to find out what I have to choose from. I'm open to any and all suggestions once they meet my reqiurements.

Solution

My best suggestion would be to use two keyboards.
Get a wireless keyboard with a touchpad for use as a home entertainment system.
When you want to play a game, plug in a wired gaming keyboard (mechanical, back lighting, macro keys) and mouse.
The only way to play games from...

I know they exist because I have seen them with some i of the feature i've listed, but i haven't seen one that has everything i want. Thus my asking if anyone knows of one.

I found a wireless keyboard with a touchpad:

Backlighting is going to drain battery life, you this doesn't seem like a feature they would offer on a wireless keyboard.
Mechanical keyboards are heavy, again not something people want in a wireless keyboard.

Where have you seen other keyboards with these requirements? I have a wireless mechanical keyboard so they do exist but they are far and few in between. As for touchpad, I've never seen one bundled with a mechanical keyboard. There are tons of normal wireless keyboards with touchpads built in (Microsoft, logitech, etc). Also good luck on back lit, let alone customizable back lighting on a wireless keyboard. Those are only recently getting on the market and they're all wired keyboards.

Not trying to be an ass, I'm genuinely interested if these things exist. But I don't think a board with your requirements exist yet due to power drain and market for mechanical keyboads.

If I conceede having the keyboard be wireless, is it possible to find a mechanical keybaord with a touchpad and customizable backlighting?

It seems from what various people have linked:
You can get a mechanical keyboard with a touchpad. These are wired and aimed at commercial use.
You can get a wireless keyboard with a touchpad. These are aimed at people sitting on the couch using a home theatre PC. I guess back lighting would be possible.
A mechanical keyboard with back lighting would only ever be aimed at gamers. These could be wireless, although back lighting would drain the batteries and generally high end gaming keyboards and mice are wired. I can't imagine anyone wanting to put a touch pad on this as it would be useless for gaming.

What do you actually want this keyboard for?

To be clear, I've seen keyboards that meet most of my criteria, but not all of them. Corsair, Razer and Cooler Master have keyboard that are mechanical with good backlighting (with some having a wide range of lighting options), but aren't wireless. While Logitech has options that are wireless, but don't have mechanical capabilities or the backlighting options. I understand that there are power concerns, but its still hard to believe that there's no keyboard that have all the above mentioned features. I do appriciate you insight, I know that finding a keyboard that meets my reqiurements would be a longshot, thus my reason for starting this thread.

I'm building a rig for gaming purposes, but I also plan to do a lot rendering with the machine. And since I dont want my girlfriend telling me I'm playing too much time playing Elder Scrolls,so I want to keep it in my living room. I also plan to use it as home entertainment system as well, thus the location in the living room. The mechanical function for my gaming, the baclighting for visuals, and the wireless capabilities to avoid anyone tripping on wires.

The only way to play games from the couch is with a console style controller. You are not going to want to use a touchpad or mouse from the couch for games.

I'm throwing my vote in with two keyboards as well.

For a media player usage go with the Logitech wireless series that has a touch pad bundled. The three flavors for those K830 (this one has backlighting), the TK820 (no backlighting), or the K400. I have the K400 and it does the job for the most part, it's a little twitchy about anything getting in the way of the reviver but its a $40 media keyboard. All 3 are small form factors and easily slip in a drawer or by the sound of the couch.

For gaming or working when you need a mechanical keyboard and you want color control and macro control, look at the Razer Croma series (when it comes out) or the Corsair Gaming K70 / K95 RGB (Not the older vengeance series). And then get yourself a nice long USB cable extension.

I sincerely doubt your going to be able to find one board that can do it all, so this is likely your best options.
