Is there a way to tell, by the name, if a processor is dual core or quad core?
I've been researching laptops and processors for about 6 hours now, and I am SO lost...

Google its name e.g. Core i5 3210M and you ll be sent to the Intel site . There you ll read what you need .

If you want a good laptop get Core i3 /i5 or i7 and a dedicated graphics card - Geforce 840M and faster .

Unfortunately no. One way to know is if it is i3 - i5 it is normally dual core. Any i7 u will most likely to be dual core and i 7 m will most likely be a quad core.

For laptops using the AMD APU, all A8 and A10 APUs are quad core.

For Intel CPU only the Core i7 CPU family have quad cores. However, not all Core i7 CPU are quad core CPUs. Only the Core i7 CPUs with the "MQ", HQ" and "MX" as part of the model number are in fact quad core CPUs. All "M" and "U" model CPUs are dual core.

- Celeron Dual-core - dual core (2 cores / 2 threads)
- Pentium Dual-core - dual core (2 cores / 2 threads)
- Core i3 series - dual core with hyperthreading (2 cores/4 threads)
- Core i5 series - dual core with hyperthreading (2 cores/4 threads) + TurboBoost
- Core i7 series - dual/quad core with hyperthreading (2/4 cores/4/8 threads) + TurboBoost {only HQ/MQ/QM/MX series are quad}

Newest AMD series are quad-core (although still weaker than intel)
