I need help with my dorm room internet connection?

Ok, so my dorm room has internet provided but our Resident Advisor said we must find our own ethernet/router. There is an ethernet jack on the wall and I just have to hook up my ethernet cable to it and then plug it into my laptop and I get internet. However, my roommate and I are getting a router. Do I just plug in the router to the ethernet jack through an ethernet cable and hook up the router wirelessly to our computers? Do I need a modem?

You would need to check with the dorm to see what restrictions they have on this. Many do not allow routers, some so not allow wireless.
In many cases on these systems they require you to log in with a userid and password if this is true, a router will not likely work. If you just need multiple ethernet ports a simple switch might work and then each end device would log on with its own id and password.

Still this is almost impossible to predict. This is a very common question they likely have a document that answer question related to how you hook things up to their network. Otherwise ask someone living near you how it is accomplished.

In any case you would never use a router that contains a modem you only want ethernet interfaces.
