Nope, the 280X is still a solid card for maxing settings and comfortable FPS on most games, and with the arrival of 900 series, 780 makes no sense, as 970 is cheaper, more efficient, more powerful than 780. But, is it worth the upgrade from 280X? No IMO.

Based on performance increase:

1st 980

2nd 780 Ti

3rd 970

Based on value/money:

GTX 970>GTX 980> GTX 780 Ti

Why?

You can certainly get 2 970s in the cost of single 980 + $50, and SLI 970 would kill the 980 in every aspect. 780 Ti is fine but 980 is simply better. 970 is $330-350, 980 is $550-620, 780 Ti is $500.

The 980 is the new top dog. If you can afford it. Go for it.

If you don't have any issues now, you don't need to upgrade. You could get a SSD if you wanted to but if you happy with the speed of our hard drive, then use that money elsewhere or save it for the next series after GTX 900 or R9 300/400 series.

MeteorsRaining has pretty much said it all so I will leave this with you -

Wait for AMD's 20nm R9 390/X cards and get yourself one of those, Or

Get 2 R9 290/X's or 1 R9 295X2 when this time comes, as these cards will receive big price cuts.

Thanks for all the answers everyone! I asked this question as I have ordered a 144mz monitor and was going to upgrade the GPU to get some frames to support it. Wasn't looking to Cross fire this card, card is quite big and probably should upgrade around it before getting a different card.

Everyone has provided their valuable bit of opinion, so I guess it'd be easier to decide now :)
