Which is better, the MSI R9-280 or the MSI R9-280X?

I picked the MSI because out of all of the other Brands of the R9-280 it has the best performance and has the best reviews. DO i really need to get the X version? I do not want to overclock anything :/ My PC specs are below. WIll the R9-280 run modern games ok or at least better than what a PS4 and Xbox ONE would?

I'd go with a stronger single card, either wait until you can afford a 970, or get the 280X. :)
Another great option is the GTX 770. I'd take that over the 280X.

it isn't, the 280 is a 7950 rebrand which lacks a couple hundred stream processors. the 280x is significantly faster than a 280. so it's not a clock difference.

the gtx970 will be indeed faster but will obviously cost more.

So would the X version not be worth the extra $60-$70? I a mainly just going to be playing games like Assassins Creed, Watch Dog, Battlefield 4 and such. Aslo if i do get the R9-280 can i get two later on or does it need to be an X version to crossfire.

You would be better off with a r9 290 or gtx 970 if your aiming for good frame rates in games like watchdogs, bf4, assassin's creed under ultra settings. I myself own a r9 280, the card's performance in the above mentioned games are not really that good although its playable with some settings turned down to high. Watchdogs in particular , need a much more powerful card to enable the ultra textures' setting.

My friend has an MSI R9 270 and plays all of these games at 60FPS on Ultra 0_o you may want to send yours back and get a new one man. Intel HD 4600 can play watchdogs on Low/Medium settings at 20-30FPS. Also your CPU could be holding you back. You could have an R9 295x2 and a crappy CPU and not be able to get more than 20 FPS on BF3

Here is an R7-260 playing watch dogs on ultra

You might want to check what resolution your friend is running at. I am running on 1080p, no way to get constant 60fps on these games on ultra settings on a r9 280 let alone the 270. I am using a i5 4670k (o/ced 4.2ghz) with 16gb ram, so i don't think the cpu is holding the gpu back.

On an ASUS IPS 23.8 inch 1080p monitor at around 30FPS on the 270. I swear dude you can check on youtube or any site on the internet and see millions of videos of the R9 280 can run every game out at the moment on Ultra at 40-60FPS as long as you have a good cpu to handle it. And if you are saying an R9-280 can not handle it than something is wrong with your system. Even a PS4 GPU is 80% weaker than the 280 yet it can run games at an ok res and FPS. There are thousands of videos from Linus, Jayz, Austin, and every other top PC product reviewer on youtube did benchmarks on the R9 280 and played every game they threw at it well above 40-60FPSFPS and the 270 could handle them all also at around 30 on ultra. It may be your system man, i hope not. Everybodys system works differently i just never heard of an R9 280 not being able to handle games when an $80 GPU can handle all games on at least low settings, maybe at a crappy FPS but still can handle them. Why would someone spend $250 on a GPU if it cant run games? :p

Yup, 40-60fps on these games are possible only with the exception of watchdogs. Try driving ingame and the frame rates will drop down quite abit to the 30's, think the game is not properly optimised for the pc version. Alot people with the gtx 780/780ti 's are already having problems running it in ultra with a lot of stuttering let alone r9 280. It runs fine in high though.

Oh ok. Here is a site showing the benchmarks of the R9 289, it runs pretty great. I never really liked Watchdogs, in my openion the graphics are like a PS3 and it is just not a solid game in my opinion. I think Ubisoft is going down hill especially after they made Brotherhood :(
