So far, I cannot see so much difference in real gaming scenario. I have HD 7970 (R9 280X) and I upgraded to GTX 970 recently. I don't see so much difference yet.

I have A XFX R9 280x and a FX 8350 and and i have been pondering the same question, but i dont belive it is worth the upgrade as i believe the R9 280x will be equivilent to a GTX 960, and would you upgrade GTX 960 to 970 I dont think so.

you can see improvements on the cpu side if you go with an intel haswell rig, moving to a 8320/8350, not that much.

Not true, 280x is powerful. i run BF4 Ultra at 1080p at a solid 60fps with only minimal drops with mantle and fx 8350. depends what game though

Yeah if you wanna run Crysis 3 with everything on max, then even a GTX 980 won't get to 60fps on average, maybe if you overclock it a lot.
But most games, even BF4, aren't that overly demanding and you can run those with a 280x on ultra with 60 fps or more, just tweak the AA sometimes if you have to, for example use 4x AA instead of 8x.

Came into my mind this morning, that for 1080p gaming there is no significant difference between the 2, I saw many benchmarks that shows the advantage of 970 is higher resolutions and multi dispalys. However for 1080p gaming the R9 280x is good.
