Simply put, any time I boot up a game, my new GPU makes a very noticeable vibrating noise. I bought this card because of its supposed silence. Alt tabbing out or quitting stops the sound completely.

It is not the gpu, case or cpu fans, as I've stopped them all separately and the noise persists. I have removed every small plastic bit from the card. While this gpu is supposed to be able to use the msi gaming app to chose between three modes, the app gives me a warning that my platform is not supported whenever I try to run it. Perhaps this is just how the card runs, but I'm honestly surprised.

My case doesn't have the best cable management, and the card is quite big - some of my cords are definitely in contact with the card, but not with any moving parts.

Specs:
msi gtx 970
i5 2500k stock
gigabyte z68ma-d2h-b3
windows 7 64 bit

Did you remove the massive sticker that's on one of the fans? I know it's a stupid question but it has to be asked.

I did, yes, and all of the small plastic coverings that cover the edges and ports.

Can't take a video yet as I'm just now leaving, but if it persists I'll record it.

You sure there aren't any other cables touching the card's fans? Or other fans in the case for that matter?

other than the psu, that's it. The noise is definitely coming from the gpu, and the fans are not causing it - stopping the fans does not stop the noise. I've moved all the cables to the side of the gpu , not under , or over if they couldn't reach . But like I said, nothing is touching the fans . Unless there is another moving part I'm not aware of .

the noise kicks in under load, so right when I boot up a game

Wait how did you turn off the CPU cooler fan while running a game? The CPU would overheat really quickly then.. Or did you set it manually at a fixed low speed?
The intel stock coolers are known to become buzzing loud, if the CPU gets hot, like in a game.

It sounds like coil whine, I'd RMA it.

Sorry that's a good point, I didn't directly stop or lower the CPU fan. Its just not coming from the CPU - switching back to my 570 stops the issue . The stock CPU fans are terrible though, and are the source of a totally separate noise that I have learned to deal with. The only fans I stopper were the gpu fans through afterburner and case fans . I will double and triple check to make sure it isn't the CPU fan once I'm home.

I haven't heard of coil whine, but I will look around and see if it's similar to the noise my card is making

but about the msi gaming app, did u use the 1 of the cd what comes with the card, because i downloaded 1 first and had also a warning, then i used the 1 on the cd, problem solved.
about the noise, bring it back to the shop if you can, because it should by very quit.
Maybe there is a little part lose inside the card.
did you put it deep enough in the pci-e slot, and put the screws in.

My MSI 970 also make a vibrating/coil whine noise. Returning it now.

If you use the MSI Gaming App, there is an icon which looks like a "snowflakes" which is used for aggressive cooling of your GPU which will cause a lot of noise, I have experienced once but turning it off in the MSI Gaming app will solve the problem.

Also use the Gaming App which comes in the CD.

Decisions man. It OCs well, and looks great but the high pitched whine sorta ruins the silence.

I was able to get the gaming app installed from the cd, but no setting masked or fixed the noise. Checked all the screws too - the sound it audible through my case when closed and even over the fan in my apartment, but generally not over my speakers. Sort of in limbo on sending it back or not.

Filing for an RMA through MSI now. Hope this works - at least the process hasn't been too difficult.
