I have an AT&T LG G3 rooted and I would like to change the boot animation to a bootanimation.zip file stored on device. However, nothing works! I've put it in system/media AND the actual location of the old bootanimation file (not a .zip, by the way. ES File Explorer doesn't know what it is), and I've made sure the permissions and owners/users are the same as the original file (which I've renamed to prevent its use). The end result, instead of a new boot animation, is the LG logo until boot into homescreen, then a glitch into lockscreen with no power button functionality, and then everything's on. Help?

Solution
the permission has to be set like this :-
permissionz.jpg

Do not rename the original cut paste it into your sd card.
Copy the new bootanimation.zip into system/media
make sure you have made system r/w not r/o in ES file explorer.
make the permission same as above image.
do not delete or change anything else.
If it doesnt work you might wanna copy the original bootanimation.zip back where it was with correct permissions to see if it works this will show problem is in your downloaded zip file.

Thanks for the reply. What file explorer is that, by the way? (I'll post when I try your method and let you know if it works.)
