Hey!
I finally managed to get an old video card to try this trick on and did everything according to the instructions. First of all, my own video card died and that is why i was willing to try. I cut the 8600GT cards pins off, which left me with all the power pins ( on the left) and 7 data pins. Now whenever i install the video card (or insert) the computer wont boot, if i remove the video card which leaves no video cards installed on the motherboard it boots. Is there something i could do or has somebody else had this problem.
I'm very poor and cannot afford a new video card.
Thanks you in advance !

you did what? If i understand correctly you cut of pci-e pins from your gpu what the hell for? and if you wanted to put the gpu in pci 1x, 2,x slots you are out of luck and whoever told you it would work deserves a punch in the face...

Yes, my bad, i try to fit it into PCIe 1x and it does fit now, two of the data pins might be damaged though.
This idea sounds very crazy indeed, but even professionals have done it. For example (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZed5r9tXHQ)
And i did not cut into my video card, it's an old one that i got to try this, it's nvidia 8600GT from an old computer that was no longer useable.
My video card (radeon 4870) got bios fail flashed and is not bootable.
I am trying to boot the computer from 8600GT on PCIe 1x slot and 4870 on PCIe 16x and flash the bios again.
Hope i explained something.

Yea you wrecked that card dude, you cant just cut bits of the pcb off. Now if you had cut the back of the slot and put it in you might have got a really really slow graphics card but you cut the card. Its buggered mate; 100%

Are you 100% sure? Because i just cut off data pins, which means the data channel between video card and motherboard will be slower aka 1x speed, where as 16x has more pins and higher speed.

its a raid card that linus was using, it didn't require as much bandwidth, but with a gpu i believe its a whole different story and would not work

What about this one, i do not know the guy, but it seemed to have worked for him.
Anyway i did some figuring and could it be that the 8600GT is not getting enough power? these sockets give out less power as i've read and this card does not have any external power connectors.

I think i found it. PCIe 1x slot max power output is 25W, correct? but 8600 GT requires 43W? I'm not sure, but this could be the cause of my problem.

just because the card doesn't have to use the connectors doesn't mean you can just cut that off. I doubt 1x would have the bandwidth for a graphics card anyway. If you need to fit an x16 card in an x1 slot you cut the slot not the card because you are severing those connections in the card. Mate, its wrecked you cut a part of the pcb off. It could be that its not getting enough power because you cut it

after a bit of research on this, i believe its more dependent on the gpu if your gpu is capable of running using only 1x it will work, but if you plan on re flashing your hd 4xxx i have to say that wont happen its dead if it diead during bios flash, unless you got 2nd bios on that card which i doubt, and even so you can only run one of those cards at a given time thanks to nvidia drivers etc... not sure a bout how it works when booting up but as far as i know you can no longer have both ati and nvidia on the same systems without issues, also are you sure you are giving it all the power trough 1x slot, that card did have external power, if not then that could be the cause aswell

As far as all the other information which is waiting tells me i can restore and the card is not dead, just trying to boot off of wrong bios. The bios is for 1GB, but something went wrong, not sure yet. If i install just my HD 4870 even the video card cooling fan starts up, but stops after 5 seconds.

Power issue cannot be related to the cutting, since all the power pins are separated aka on the left. I tried installing the card into PCIe x16 slot and it wont boot either so im not sure about the power issue.

Why were you were you even trying to flash the BIOS anyway even on motherboards there's very little reason to flash one let alone a graphics card

then what more do you want the card is dead if you cannot boot with it simple as that, you can try with another card but honestly i would't bother with it just would get another gpu for replacement

The 8600gt didn't have external power, the gts did though so if you have one of those you will need external power.

Yes, if i get another video card that requires external powering it would be perfect i guess, because i have a large power supply.
Any other ideas so far?

I dont know if this is of any help, but i boot up the computer without video card in:
1) it boots up
2) As soon i insert the cut video card it kind of cancels the circuit and it shuts off instantly and when i remove it after 2 second it boots up itself then i insert it and shuts off again
i am now pretty sure that this issue is power related and the PCIe 16x card is just not getting enough power from those pins. Is there anything else i could try? It's very hard to find a PCI card or PCIe 16x card that consumes less than 25W or one that has external powering, since very few of these old cards use over 75W which is the maximum for PCIe 16x
Thank you!

So has anyone done this before?
I contacted someone who did and he said there has to be an extra wire to indicate that the 16x is in 1x's socket, i'm still waiting on his reply.
Does anyone know where the indicator is exatly, i removed the heatsink and bought some new thermal paste already.

A wire must be between two of those pins to indicate that you are putting it into 1x slot. I will report back after i've completed and succeeded.
