Have TP-link l2 managed switch (tl-sg3424P),

- an Apple airport express
- Fios Verizon router and a
- wireless box for the HVAC (heating and AC)

Right now fios router connects to apple which connects wirelessly to our laptops etc.

We just upgraded to Cat6 throughout the house. 4 ports in 5-6 locations. The cat 6 wires are all plugged into the switch.

How to I start using the switch -do I plug the fios box into the switch, and then the switch into the apple?

I really have no idea about this stuff.

Also.. our switch is a POE as we have 4 POE Lorex security cameras.. how do I configure those?

thank you !

Sara

Router -> switch -> devices should work.

That's the way I have mine, but an unmanaged switch instead of managed.

Connect the FiOS ONT to the WAN port on the Airport. Then connect the LAN port on the Airport to one of the uplink (non-PoE) ports on the switch.

Router to switch - where does airport connect

router to airport to switch

the 1866 number on the box tech support (someone overseas who isn't familiar with fios) says switch to router to airport

With FiOS, that is completely incorrect. Actually, with any system.

Router, to DHCP and deliver the internal NAT addresses.
Switch to create more ports than the 4 on the back of the router.

The airport is the router.

Someone Somewhere said:

Maybe, depending on exactly how everything is set up.
The ActionTec that comes with FiOS is modem/router. You could dumb it down to remove the router functions and use the Airport as router.

In which case, yes....ONT -> Airport -> switch

Or you could use the Airport for simply the wireless function.

In which case FiOS router -> switch -> devices, incl the Airport.

FiOS lets you run everything off the coax to the router, or a separate router directly off the ONT.

Ah, OK. I'm used to dumb ONTs and was generalising.

He's probably got two chained routers, then.

For instance in my house, all runs directly on coax from the ONT to the FiOS router.

Switch off the FiOS router for devices.
MoCA through the coax for ethernet devices upstairs. Eventually I'll put a switch up there for more wired coverage, and a wifi access point to provide better back yard coverage.

Only 1 or 2 devices connected directly to the FiOS router....the Ooma phone, and my work laptop (because my firewall box does not like passing the work laptop VPN traffic, and I'm not inclined to alter it to do that. It works perfectly as is.)

Thanks guys! We do have both the Verizon (box/router) and the Airport (has a router).

What we have been doing (pre-switch) was FIOS to Verizon box to Airport box to computer.

Let me see if I understand. There are two configurations:
1) FIOS -> Verizon router -> Switch -> Airport (but would need to use the Airport only for its wireless/hard drive functions - does this need a different Airport setting?)
2) FIOS -> Verizon router -> Airport -> Switch (but would need to remove the Verizon box's router function - does this need a different setting?)

What happens if we get the configuration wrong? I read something about IP addresses getting mixed up?

I believe config #1 would work no problem. Unsure of what settings, if any, you need to change on the Airport.
