Have TP-link l2 managed switch (tl-sg3424P),

- an Apple airport express
- Fios Verizon router and a
- wireless box for the HVAC (heating and AC)

Right now fios router connects to apple which connects wirelessly to our laptops etc.

We just upgraded to Cat6 throughout the house. 4 ports in 5-6 locations. The cat 6 wires are all plugged into the switch.

How to I start using the switch -do I plug the fios box into the switch, and then the switch into the apple?

I really have no idea about this stuff.

Also.. our switch is a POE as we have 4 POE Lorex security cameras.. how do I configure those?

thank you !

Maybe, depending on exactly how everything is set up.
The ActionTec that comes with FiOS is modem/router. You could dumb it down to remove the router functions and use the Airport as router.

In which case, yes....ONT -> Airport -> switch

Or you could use the Airport for simply the wireless function.

In which case FiOS router -> switch -> devices, incl the Airport.

FiOS lets you run everything off the coax to the router, or a separate router directly off the ONT.

For instance in my house, all runs directly on coax from the ONT to the FiOS router.

Switch off the FiOS router for devices.
MoCA through the coax for ethernet devices upstairs. Eventually I'll put a switch up there for more wired coverage, and a wifi access point to provide better back yard coverage.

Only 1 or 2 devices connected directly to the FiOS router....the Ooma phone, and my work laptop (because my firewall box does not like passing the work laptop VPN traffic, and I'm not inclined to alter it to do that. It works perfectly as is.)

Thanks guys! We do have both the Verizon (box/router) and the Airport (has a router).

What we have been doing (pre-switch) was FIOS to Verizon box to Airport box to computer.

Let me see if I understand. There are two configurations:
1) FIOS -> Verizon router -> Switch -> Airport (but would need to use the Airport only for its wireless/hard drive functions - does this need a different Airport setting?)
2) FIOS -> Verizon router -> Airport -> Switch (but would need to remove the Verizon box's router function - does this need a different setting?)

What happens if we get the configuration wrong? I read something about IP addresses getting mixed up?

Hi,

I am using a switch on my Verizon home network albeit for somewhat different purposes. I have complete instructions and a customized connectivity info-graphic showing the setup that I'd be happy to share with you if you've not yet resolved your issue. Though our aims in using the switch might be different, perhaps my setup would at least provide some greater insight into solving your issue.

I run an Apple Airport Extreme in front of the Verizon Actiontec, meaning that the Actiontec is hanging off one of the Extreme LAN ports. I do this simply because I prefer my network be more or less controlled by the Airport Extreme. I only need the Actiontec to provide Guide and VoD to my TVs and STBs.

I use the switch to mirror inbound/outbound traffic for network monitoring (InfoSec) purposes. It has nothing to do with HVAC. Lemme know via email, and if it proves useful then I'll look more closely into posting on Tom's Hardware. Otherwise, I don't think my solution exactly belongs here. Thanks.

Regards,

Mike
