Greetings all! I've recently wanted to revisit Fallout 3 and give it a whirl again, but am beset by NUMEROUS crashes. When I first played it, it had the occasional hiccup, but nowhere near the levels I'm getting now. Randomly during gameplay, I'll get the message "Fallout 3 has stopped working". From personal experience, the highest probability of it happening is during a heavy gunfight, but I've also see it happen while just passing through an empty hallway. I'm currently at my wits end here, so any help would be appreciated. Here are my system specs (courtesy of dxdiag).

(Goes without saying that when I first played this, it wasn't on the same computer)

One other thing I believe should be mentioned. Whilst scouring for answers, I read one suggestion to look in eventviewer. I did so and whenever an error shows up related to Fallout 3, these two culprits always show.

Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x001878f8

Don't know what it means, but a possible clue perchance? If any more information is needed, I will provide. Thank you very much!

That method was one of the first I tried and it doesn't appear to do anything. Curiously, I was able to play it for a good hour or so with no issues. Then when I entered a loading screen, it suddenly crashed. Booted it up again, ran normally, then when I got into a gunfight, it crashed again. Infuriatingly enough, its now crashing when I try and load a save from the start menu (Something that has NEVER happened before).

Hm...

I haven't encounter such a problem with Fallout 3 so can't speak of personal experience.

I remember years and years ago having very frustrating problem with Elder Scrolls III - Morrowind where the game would just shut itself down for no apparent reason. I had another 20+ games installed on my PC and never had problem with any other game so I was at a loss trying to figure it out.

I remember I almost had developed tendinitis in one of my fingers pressing F5 (quick safe) like every 30 seconds because I was afraid not to lose my progress due to the game closing itself.

If your temps are fine and all other games work ok then I guess it's some specific issue with Fallout 3 on your system.
Have you tried verifying the game files (if on Steam)? Also maybe you could try downloading and installing older version of Direct X - it won't mess up with the version you currently have, it will only add/update the files it finds necessary. Just ideas.

Indeed, every other game appears to work fine, save Fallout 3. Should have mentioned that I'm using the GOTY edition (not steam). How would I go about installing an older version of Direct X? (I believe F3 uses 9, I'm currently at 11)
