In skyrim at high settings with 30 mods or so it reaches about 60-62c but in Overgrowth, which is a lot less intensive it runs at a smooth 70-80fps, it reaches about 72c. is this normal?

(and thats at the default fan speed of 20%, when its at 65% it stays at about 56-61 for Overgrowth. what fan speed should i have it at because i know too high and it causes long term damage but too low and it could overheat.)

And I was also wondering, would i be able to upgrade to either a GTX 970/980 without it overheating?

Sorry if its a bit all over the place I just have a lot of questions.

72 C for a video card is fine.

About upgrade, what powersupply do you have?

72 c is not at all a unsafe temperature the card can even go to 80+ c and be safe i will say below 90c for a GPU is safe i have gtx 760 while playing watch dogs it reaches 75+ c so i make the fan speed to 80% to lower the heat but i live in a hot climate my ambient room temp is 34c.

And you can upgrade to gtx 970 or 980 series that will be a huge upgrade for you.

I believe it's a 600w one, however I will be able to upgrade if necessary

For gtx 970 and gtx 980 a 500 - 550 watt PSU is enough with 30 amps or more continuous current .

BTW what is the make and model of the PSU?

What brand is it? As long as it is not a Junk brand, you most likely to be OK.

I'm not 100% sure what brand it is but i'm fairly sure it's a pretty bad one, i'll probably have a look inside my PC tomorrow so I can tell you then.

Good quality powersupplies of acceptable wattage (550-600w should be enough for one of these cards) aren't expensive. So you won't need to spent a fortune on one. That is if it is junk, better safe than sorry. If it is a decent one, you are good to go.

I had a look inside my pc and it's a Sumvision PowerX 3 Pro edition, it doesn't specify what it's wattage is however it seems to range from 600w to 800w. If it's junk could you recommend a better one?, preferably under £100. also, my motherboard is an Asrock B85m; would that be compatible with a GTX 980?

gtx 970 needs a minimum of 500 watt PSU with 28 amps or higher continuous current .

This is a very good PSU http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Core-Edition-PRO550W-supply...

If you are planning on SLI in future then this would be a good choice.

And yes gtx 970 is supported by your board.

Does that go for the 980 as well?

yes it does the gtx 980 consumes little bit more power than the gtx 970 165 watt TDP vs 145 watt TDP and 28 amp vs 30 amp but its will also work with a 500 - 550 watt PSU and your board.
