First I'd like to apologize if there are any other questions like this in the forum. I spent a good hour 1/2 to try and find a similar situation to the one I'm in however no luck.

WD 1TB HDD bought in 2011 Exactly as:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/1TB-inch-Internal-Hard-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411927511&sr=8-1&keywords=WD+HDD

Computer crashed randomly after installing steam game then would not reboot. Fortunately I have a laptop, USB memory stick and a good internet connection. I downloaded windows 8.1 and popped it on a memory stick with windows boot manager to assist.

Windows was unable to repair WD HDD as the drive was being "locked". As a result I cleaned and reformatted my 500GB, unplugged the WD HDD and installed windows 8.1 (today).

Extra information: The HDD is able to be seen by CMD, boot manager. I can't access my user profile from my windows 8.1 installation. I have used chkdsk and results are inconclusive as it has taken over 2 hours for the bar to get past the first 10th. So my HDD is definitely knackered.

My question thus far is that, if I back up my all of my important data on the WD HDD, would i be able to use windows 8.1 to repair whatever it is wrong with the WD HDD? I'm currently using a trial version of windows 8.1 and would like to have my legit computer back ASAP as I'm going to uni tomorrow!

Thanks and would you be able to redirect me to the same post that has a similar situation with with this if that has been resolved? Thanks a bunch guys :D

Solution
Hey there, StcUk!

Really sorry to hear about your problem with the WD Blue.
I can suggest you a couple of things that might help you.
1. You can try to:
- Boot up from your Windows 8.1 USB
- Don't click 'Install Now', click Repair Your Computer
- Click Advanced Options
- Click Other Options
- Click Diagnose my PC
- Wait for your computer to reboot

2. If this fails, you can run repair commands to fix the boot record
with bootrec.exe

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

3. Also you can try to test your drive with Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for DOS:
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=606&sid=2&lang=en
This will test the physical condition of your HDD. This version of the DLG is only for DOS...

Sorry about the late reply. After recently becoming a father, being in university as well as work I forgot to upload my solution.

I ended up wiping my smaller HDD installed windows 8.1, using the HDD repair tool supplied by windows, it fixed majority of the HDD. Turns out i had a dodgey cable, which in fact I've only recently changed.

From what i can guess as the computer was booting windows the wire lost connection and corrupted some of the boot files. As a result I ended up saving my work, steam library, and other important documents.

Hey there again, StcUk!

Your absence is absolutely excused!
Congrats on the new family member! :)

I'm also glad that you were able to retrieve your data as well!
Good luck with everything! I'm truly happy for you! :bounce:
